Chainsaws R Us Trip Report - Cadron Creek, Sunday 10/18/09

Post by Cowper » Tue Oct 20, 2009 6:23 am

As promised, Chainsaws R Us mounted a boat recovery mission in conjunction with Captain Aleve’s scheduled clean-up day at Cadron Creek on Sunday. The original scouting for the mission was performed by founding member and Vice President of Security, Chester. Mission documentation was to be prepared by our VP of legal affairs and Public Affairs Officer (Lupe), but like her past promises of  for services rendered, said documentation has not yet materialized. In fact, all she did was show us her middle finger all day; what’s up with that? Transportation of needed supplies to the site was provided by DeBo, who proved that yes, a Mohawk Solo 13 can haul 4 bags of gear, a trolling motor, a deep cycle marine battery, and one worthless husband. New Employee Trainees Andy and Lalyle also provided significant assistance in the initial recovery, and demonstrated willingness to face gratuitous danger in debris piles and other unsafe work locations.

Our efforts paid off; the plan was to recover 3 boats, and three boats were recovered.

Boat #1 was in pretty good shape, with relatively minor, repairable damage, and water-tight. Boats #2 and #3 have seen better days. On a “Surfability” scale, with 1 being a used refrigerator and 10 being a 2010 Jackson Fun, I can only give it a 3. Installation of a functioning auto-bailer might raise this to a 3.5.

At last report Boats #2 and #3 were available for claim under the Highway 65 Bridge. Boat #1 has been delivered to the very surprised and very grateful owner, a resident of Greenbrier who reports that it was stolen from Cadron Creek about a year ago, having disappeared during the night on a day when it did not rain and the river did not rise. Clearly the River Gods do not like boat theft, and used a flood to place the boat where Chainsaws R Us would find it and do the right thing.

Oh, I'll show you a finger, alright!

Just to clarify, so no one gets the wrong idea...

Friday night I decided I needed to slice just a tiny bit more off of one of my wrist gaskets on my drysuit. Even though just a little over a month ago I had almost successfully lopped off the tip of a finger with a pruning saw, I obliviously grabbed an x-acto razor knife and set to work. Alas, I still have not learned my lesson about how to safely manage sharp objects, and once again I broke what I'm sure must be an important safety rule: namely, don't slice your own appendages with the sharp object. And, yes, it just so happened to be my middle finger this time.

(Last time it was my pointer/index finger...so at this rate I figure by the time I get to my pinky finger, well...let's just say I fear that pinky finger might be doomed).

So, yes, I happily showed my war wound off to anyone who asked (and okay, maybe a few others who didn't). 8)

BTW, given this history, can you believe those idiots at Chainsaws R Us actually let me use a chainsaw last year? I mean, really. That's just NOT a good idea. Clearly they have no common sense or good judgment, and I really don't know why I continue to associate with such characters. :poke:

For the record, an x-acto knife can slice completely through your finger nail just like it's butter. Anyhoo, I'm happy to report that on Saturday I went to Hobby Lobby and picked up a pair of pricey micro scissors, which I will be using from now on on all gasket trimmings. I'm sure $12 for a pair of scissors will pale in comparison to the cost of my ER visit.

Who knew this whitewater kayaking business could be so freakin' dangerous?
I've heard that into every life a little of it must fall,
but you'll never catch me complaining about too much of that southern rain.
