1st to be weird.

Post by A Savage spanke » Sat Sep 12, 2009 12:06 pm

So over the summer I watched a new fad emerge. The best idea since the pet rock. People going down rapids on pretty much giant wake surf boards and using a really long paddle. I have yet to see anyone make it through an entrance before falling off or onto their knees. With that being said, apparently this is catching on because werner is making paddles for these people now http://www.wernerpaddles.com/paddles/st ... ance_core/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . So I know someone in the state has tried it, admit it, who's the first to be weird and what did you think about it?

They're basically trying to shove it down everyone's throat as the next big thing. It has been the focus in every paddling magazine lately. They even put it in the AW Journal canoe issue and called it standup c-1ing. Ugh!

JCChrist. There was a group from Nashville 30 years ago that would paddle the Ocoee standing up in OCA's. I can recall a guy and at least 2 girls that would run Ocoee every weekend like that without floatation. But, watching Jim Snyder stride Big Splat was a treat. Dale

Word.

Uh, Roman, it's called covering the many aspects of the sport. Sorta like TV. Don't like what you see in the mag, don't read it. Think you can do it? :poke: I've paddled my old Mohole with a load of gear standing up with a regular paddle to stretch the legs and back. Try this shot and it's origins go back a way.

PS, I remember a shot of Nolan Whitesell surfing the bottom of the Nanty Falls standing up.

I agree and that's why it should be in the surfing magazines! :lol:

SUP'in

PLUS:
* K-1 and C-1's can quit bickering and unite in their dislike of a third type...
* New way to make Class 1 through II+ interesting again
* Fine tune your balance and skills at water reading
* Better view of what's coming
* Excellent money-maker for companies finding that customers no longer believe the hype over every new K-1 or C-1 hull they offer for sale
* You're the one everyone will notice on the river, and you don't have to "loop" it, just survive...
* Corran's doing it, WE....MUST....FOLLOW.... :shock:

MINUS:
* Most of us will still choose our K-1 or C-1 for the big days
* Another $1500 in gear.
* No, make that $3000 to $5000, the designs are still evolving and we'll have to buy 3 before we find the one we like

BOTTOM LINE: If you'll buy one, I'd love to try it for a few minutes. Until then, if Billy brings his big SOT to Rendezvous, I'll bring my long paddle, and we'll have a poor-man's SUP set-up for everyone to try.
Trash: Get a little every time you go!

I've seen striding, and I've got video of a massively ripped dude running a sweet line through broken nose while catching eddies, but thats not what I'm talking about. Anyone got a picture of one standing up on the big wakesurf thing?

Cowper, if you're talking about Billy Williams, he won't be at Vous this year. Got the word today.
