what is the best pfd for whitewater applications?
... the one that fits you and floats you! It's very personal. Having said that, you need one that allows you to move freely through your paddling strokes... Many are built to ride high and have large arm-holes. If you're a rafter or are planning on being on big-volume water, think "more flotation" just in case (when) you swim. Also consider lash-tabs and pockets. What are you planning to carry in the pfd? Are you planning on getting into swiftwater rescues? If so, there are special pfd's that allow towing a boat with a teather, being lowered on a line, and make getting loose easy... very important! Whatever you decide, don't scrimp!! Your life depends on the pfd you'll be wearing for a long, long time!
In several weeks, the ACC will have its Rendezvous. There are always good, local outfitters there with the latest models of pfd's and other paddling equipment. There employees know how to fill your needs, and sometimes even give discounts off retail to ACC members. Good luck!
