A long waaaays.....if you go to Marshall and up it's better than 40 miles one way from my best estimate......I'm sure someone will correct me if wrong :hammer: ......why not do South Maumee? It's 13 miles from Gilbert and an easy drive.

South it is. Sortuv confusing. N Maumee is accessed from the north and S from the south, but S Maumee is physically north of N Maumee. Confused yet?????

Take hwy. 27 east from Marshall and go to Morning Star, then left on hwy. 49 (prolly a county rd) there's a S Maumee sign. My hubby and I might could be persuaded to come along and help shuttle if you're wanting some company.

You can get to North M from Gilbert via back roads..gravel. Got maps and gps? Probly no signs. If that is your thing, ask the locals. I drove thru there but it was years ago.

I have driven the back roads from Gilbert to Maumee North in the past couple of years. The roads are not marked and I would say use a good map or GPS. I used a GPS and did just fine. However the roads are not the best. You should have good tires before making the trip. I replaced my tires with only 26,000 miles on them last summer because they were destraoyed by the rocks. I now have 10 ply tires on my truck.

Also even though going to North Maumee throught the gravel roads takes just as long as if you were going to go to South Maumee through Marshall. You can drive 55 MPH or you can drive 20 MPH. There are also some low water crossings so if it is raining or has been raining be careful driving the gravel roads.

The road via Marshall is all paved except for the last 2-3 miles and it is a narrow, good gravel road into the park. No crossings of any sort. The park is pretty and clean with a beautiful gravel bar.

Good point about the time, PP. I should have added that fact. My wife sez that about many of my "short cuts."

Gilbert to NORTH Maumee is 14 miles by gravel road. Figure on 40 minutes each way.

Just to clarify a few things:

North Maumee access is on the north side of the River and the Gilbert to Maumee gravel road is by far the best option. The gravel roads are in good condition but as mentioned it is easy to get lost.

South Maumee access is on the south side of the river and you should go by way of Marshall.

Map directions Beginning at the gravel bar at Gilbert:
Go 2.4 miles: From Gilbert gravel bar go north out of town.
Continue in a northerly direction until the road "Y"s.
Take the left (North) road.
Go 1.3 miles: From "Y", road goes in a north and westerly direction.
A road comes in from the right. Take road to the right.
Go 1.1 miles: From right turn go east then north, crossing Tomahawk Creek.
You will come to an intersection. Take road to the right.
Go 0.8 mile: From right turn go east.
You will come to an intersection. Take road to the left.
Go 1.6 miles: From left turn go north.
You will come to an intersection. Take road to the right.
Go 4.6 miles: From right turn go north-east then the road is going to take a general route south east.
At Maumee, take road to the right.
Go 2.0 miles: From Maumee, go south. The North Maumee access is at the end of the road.

We are all afflicted with Cognitive Dissonance. The greater our religious, social, financial or political affiliation, the greater the affliction. We hear what we want to hear. We believe what we want to believe. Truth becomes irrelevant.

We did that same float last weekend. Used Wild Bills to shuttle our stuff. Charged $35.00 that's a good price. The gravel road is around 10 miles long and is tipical gravel road.

There is another road..besides the one on Richard's map. That would be the one you do NOT want to take with the bad crossings and tire killing rocks. The road Richard shows goes up and hits a very well maintained county road with many houses and farms.
