Anyone know of a late model Subaru (Forester or Outback) or Honda CRV for sale. I have a friend who is looking for one.

P.S. - I talked to a Subaru dealer yesterday and the guy said they expect the diesels in the US by 2011. Said the 6 speed Forester AWD diesel is 44 mpg... May have to save my pennies.

I do not understand what is going on with Diesels in the US.
I knowToyota offers a "hoss" Tacoma diesel in England.
I know from years of visits to South America that toyota tacoma diesels are every where and have been for years. and, they are all running well dispite primitive operational conditions.
Suburu and their diesel offer "yet to materalize" is all over the various message boards. I hope they break the log jam and encourage more companies to offer small diesels. From tests I ran in RandyJ's Suby, I know I cannot sleep in the back of a Suby, but just might buy a diesel one anyway.
I keep reading about super hi milage small diesels in European Countries. Some approaching that 100 mpg target.
Maybe we should get Congress to make it easier to import or even better manufacture these small diesel engined hi mpg units here in the US we could get more people spending their money to buy new cars.

I've been wondering about this for years, but all I've got is couple of points of speculation and the knowledge imparted by a few minutes of googling. But hey, this is the internet, so I'll spout it and maybe get quoted as an expert somewhere else...okieboater wrote:I do not understand what is going on with Diesels in the US.
1) Diesel engine reputations ruined in general for many US consumers by some hastily designed GM products during the 70's gas crunch. But that is old news...
2) Differences in US vs European emmision standards. When I searched the US standards, it appears we have one standard that both gas and diesels must meet. In the European charts, I find two separate standards, one for gas burners, a second for diesels. From looking at the numbers, BOTH engines are required to be very clean burning, however, the different operating characteristics are recognized and the diesel is allowed to be slightly higher on some things, while it must be lower on others. The European rule-makers have leveled the playing field and given diesels a chance. Their reward seems to be a significantly larger percentage of diesels on the road, and thus significantly lower demand for fuel.
If somebody really knows for sure, please correct me if my guesses are off-base.
