Any place close to LR w/ decent conditions for newbies?

Looking for some guidance on a 7/26 day trip. Youngsters involved so I'm looking for slow water. Thanks in advance for the guidance.

45 minute drive from west LR---Ouachita River...Remmel Dam to Rockport takes 2-3 hours. Probably will be the same water release schedule as last week (starts at 10a) but be sure you confirm. I have never paddled but understand it is class I until you get to the ledge at the take-out point (which is low class II). You can take out before the ledge OR have someone below to pick out any "swimmers".
Someone else may chime in who has made the run....
