Thanks USGS! (New Gage, South Fork Little Red at Gulf Mtn)

Post by Cowper » Tue Jul 14, 2009 10:40 pm

Looks like a new gage has gone on-line for the South Fork of the Little Red. The new gage is at Gulf Mountain WMA, near Scottland, and should give us a much better indication for levels on the most popular sections of this stream than the gage we have been using up until now. We won't know for sure until we get some trip reports, but for now I'm going to guess that decent floating will begin at about 4 feet on the new gage.

In addition, the gage has precipitation totals (for more advance warning that a float trip may be in the making), as well as a host of other data of interest including air temperature, water temperature, and a smorgasboard of water quality measures.

At a time when many USGS stations in other states are being shut down, we're getting a new one. I feel very lucky! My thanks go out to the USGS and the US Forest Service, who apparently cooperated to bring us this new gage.

Pretty Kool!

I wonder how well it'll predict rainfall on the snow creek/nogo run on the bayou or the archey fork run? :hammer: :hammer:

 It will be several hills from that section of Illy B. May give more notice on the Archey. Water only about 6 miles or so north would find its way to the Archey.

Thanks to those what did.
You sure this is on the right channel?

Thanks USGS, and thanks Cowper for letting us know about the new gage:) Does anyone know where it's located on Gulf Mt?

At a guess I'd say they would have put it on the Lo Gap Road bridge. Not Low Gap where the culverts are, though that would have been nice, the one with the big bridge almost straight north from Scotland. Plenty of sunshine for power, large stable structure to attach it to, and easy to get to for maintenance.

Just a guess mind you, and either way it should make for better predictions of the floating levels once we figure out the correlation with the numbers.

I don't think that is right AW give GPS coordinates. See link below.

There is a site map for the gauge.Click on "Summary of all available data for this site". The next page will give you Latitude and Longitude. Click the drop down labeled "available data for this site" and select "site map"

Wow. If those coordinates are right it's WAY upstream. Isn't that about where the Brushy Fork put-in is?

I compared the photo in AMERICAN WHITEWATER to the maps in a Van Buren County Plat Book and the map of Van Buren County in my Arkansas Outdoor Atlas. The new USGS Gauge is located about a mile below the confluence of Bushy Fork and South Fork of the Little Red where Slick Rock Ford RD fords the Little Red River. The land at the ford belongs to Green Bay Packing.
