floating info

Post by dwilson » Sun Jul 12, 2009 8:42 pm

We are planning on floating a section of the Buffalo this coming weekend. Was thinking Gilbert to Maumee or Maumee to Dillards Ferry. We have not been on either of these. Which sees less traffic and has good gravel bars for a sleep over? Painter Bob what about the fishin on these sections?

the water is low- low... (the upper district has shut down,) so that puts all the floaters down that way. i still feel that the carver to mt.hersey or woolum, would go for a while longer . but the river goes under ground just above woolum. i haven't seen that. but it's about time for that to happen.. the late afternoon bite has worked well, noon is the latest put on time for outfitters. so you'll have the river to your self! any time after that... hope that helps?

Gilbert to Maumee doesn't see near the traffic that Maumee to Dillard's gets. But as was posted above the Buffy is LOW. Still in the middle of low but floatable at Dillard's so you might be ok, not to much dragging. Might wanna do a rain dance one night this week :poke:

Not bad, but you still need to keep dancing. Maybe you need Gretchen to help you dance too.

Rough numbers as of 11:30AM monday 7/13/09
Inches of rain Inches of river rise
Ponca 0.6 0.10
Pruitt 0.7 0.14
HW65 0.5 0.08
HW14 0.85 0.13

Things sort of hot and humid, and thirsty trees drink more than in winter.

Thanks for doing whatever you were doing though, just need more of it. Expect river will continue to fall at same rate as before rain unless we get more rain.

Let me know if you need links to the gauges.

We're thinking some short runs Friday/Saturday (i.e. Tyler Bend to Gilbert). The low but floatable I saw was anything above 3.1 ft at the 65 bridge. Looks like that should hold, but wish it would be higher. Never done that section. Does that sound doable?

Is there any "current" there even with "ample" levels of 4.6-8.5 ft?

I'm confused if the river can go "underground" above Woolum at low water...how far downstream before you can paddle it again in low water.

mike,..I have never seen it.. but, that part of the river flows into a bluff, and at the bottom of it goes into a cave like opening,( or a sink hole,) and from that point on for a mile or so the river bed is dry. and just above woolum it seeps back out of the riverbed and starts flowing again..richland creek pours in right at woolum. and a few other small trickles add to that middle section.. and that is about 75% flat standing pools. all paddle, and cross your fingers the wind doesn't blow in your face. oh yes, the rangers are jumping out of the woods below woolum and just after tyler bend........ DO THE DANCE!.. OR, GO WASH YOUR CAR AND LEAVE THE WINDOWS DOWN..so we can float the upper sections and save that flat water for this winters camping trips!!!!

I am not aware of the river going underground above Woolum.

At the end of the pool at Woolum it goes underground and it stays underground until Margaret White Bluff.
As you drive next to the river between the ranger house at Jamison Creek until just before meeting the road to Pindall you will see nothing but dry river bed. Large river stones. The length of time it stays dry depends on the amount of rain. Last year we had rain and I thought it might just break the pattern. However, for two weeks it was dry. I met a gentleman at Woolum a few years ago who was about 4th generation. He said his grandfather told him the river in his lifetime had always gone dry for at least a short time. This man said the same thing during his lifetime. It has always gone dry since I have been watching as well.

Danny, I would love to go with yall. Since the tick ordeal I am being very cautious. I am probably going to wait till fall before getting on the river again.

Right On, Richard!

Welcome back, Brother! A lot of people have been missing you, myself included!

Have fun this weekend and stay safe!

Oh. And by the way?

Don't forget to check for ticks. Those little suckers can be pretty nasty!

OK, it's all starting to make some sense now, whew, I suppose I need to check in here more often.

I look out the back window and I see my brother over at his place trying to do some kind of Michael Jackson impression or something, looks like maybe something that might have gone on if they didn't get his hair put out. I hollar at the grandkids that are playin' out in the yard to get in the house right now, and lock all the doors. I'm thinkin' maybe it's hydrophobia, maybe it's somma that tick fever like Richard has, but whatever it is, It's gotta be dangerous....

Rain Dance, and it's fer you Arkansawyers, now I understand.

Richard, seems you got all those folks over there scared to go to the bushes and take(leave) a crap....we gotta bring a portable privvy over there now when we float, or can those of us that are immune to ticks still dig us a hole? :poke:
