Thurs Thrills: Lower Lil Mo 7/2

Post by Lupe » Sat Jun 27, 2009 8:12 pm

That run down the Little Mo was so nice, I'm gonna do it twice! :D

3 generators from the Narrows Dam will start at 3pm. Plan to meet at 2:15 at the 13th St bridge (take out) in Murfreesboro to consolidate people and boats and run shuttle. We'll then head to the dam off Hwy 19, geared up and ready to ride the surge down when they start releasing at 3pm.

(as you take hwy 26 into Murfreesboro...when 26 turns to the left across from the little Mexican restaurant, you should continue "straight" onto 13th St. Follow this road until you get to the river...don't cross the bridge - we meet on the near side off to the right.)

Folks from the Little Rock area who want to carpool: we'll meet at 11:45am at the Kmart parking lot off Rodney Parham/near 430. If other folks want to arrange carpools from other points, please add your post.

Give us a heads up if you plan to meet (either for carpool or at the take out) so we know to be on the look out for you! Should be another fun afternoon of frolicking in those cool, dam released waters...and a good way to kick off your long July 4th weekend! 8)
I've heard that into every life a little of it must fall,
but you'll never catch me complaining about too much of that southern rain.

I would like to join in...give me a chance to apply my newly acquired Rockport "skills"
I may bring my son*.

I live in Ferndale so will plan to meet at K-mart at 11:45a(driving a maroon Ford PU) .....probably can haul 1-2 more boats and would be happy to give someone a ride if they need it...not sure I can do the dinner afterward so anyone riding with us can factor that in.

Dave & I are planning to be there . . . we'll be leaving from Hot Springs if anyone wants to hook up and car-pool.

Sounds like a blast!

Looking for a place to take my wife that's just starting out - she has a wet exit but that's about it - would this be an ok run for a newbie? What class are the rapids? We had planned on going to Jack's Fork or the Eleven Point in Missouri, but this sounds like more fun!

Beth, Dave, Mark, Hayden - look forward to seeing you all on Thurs!

Mark - did I meet you and Hayden once at the UALR pool? You in a Hero, Hayden in a 2Fun, perhaps?

Karla - no generators on Friday, so if you go, be sure to wear good hiking shoes!!! :poke:

Landcruiser - the Lil Mo is fun class II. With 3 generators, it is quite swift current, and the river goes right up to the brush/trees along the bank, so it can take a while to swim to the side and find a good spot to re-enter your boat, but the river itself is pretty straightforward in terms of the rapids. With super warm temperatures, as long as your wife would be okay with perhaps having a couple spills and swims, I think it's a pretty good river for a newbie. If catching eddies is difficult, you really can just stay in the main flow and be fine...with one exception!

The exception is that you do need to catch the eddy at the take out, which is not a super easy/newbie friendly eddy to catch, but we station some strong folks in the water there to help out, and if you flip there and wash down, it's not the end of the world. We had one person flip and wash down this past week, and other than having to do a bit of bush-whacking back upstream along the bank, it didn't seem too big of a deal.

We'll have a few strong paddlers along on Thurs so it certainly would be fine to come along and see how it goes!

Looking forward to it....

We might have met at UALR's pool....we were there several times until we learned to roll. I am still in a Pyranha and Hayden is in an Eskimo. We both have rolls tested in moving water thanks to all the instruction we received at UALR (and mucho persistance). Not much river experience(I have been on upper Mulberry, Spring, and Cadron....Hayden on Spring) but have been to Rockport several times....we are both OK with ferrying, peel-outs, getting into eddies, S-turns, etc.

See ya Thursday!!

Ah, yes...we have met at the pool, although you weren't the father/son pair I was thinking of!

Lil Mo is fun for practicing your river roll as there are lots of deep chutes with big wave trains that can be fun to flip over and roll up in...plus it helps cool you off!

See you all Thursday!

I'm so bummed that I have to work Thursday. I'd gladly do this run again.

We'll be there - David and Faith Posey from Batesville - we're gonna stay at the Arlington at HotSprings tonight and drive on down thursday - looking forward to meeting all you guys! I'll be paddling a Wavesport Habitat 75 and my wife will be in a Riot 55 - she practiced her wet exit in the pool this morning.
