Saline River Shuttle Needed

My fiance and I are planning a quick two-day canoe trip on the lower Saline and I'm looking for a shuttle to take our car from the SH 8 intersection near Johnsville to the HW 82 intersection in the Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge. Anyone have any shuttle information that might be useful?? We are going next weekend (June 13 & 14).

April,

As a kid, we floated the Saline below Warren in the early sixties, so I'd love to hear how your trip goes. Are you floating this trip in canoes or kayaks, or maybe even a jonboat with small outboard motor? At any rate do let us know how you enjoy it.
Short of knowing someone in Crossett or Eldorado to help with the shuttle, I would have to either take two vehicles ,or maybe go to Crossett and visit with the locals and try and get a 'gut feeling' for some local that might help you since it's all very close to there.

Best Regards
Jim

I was thinking about helping out, but you two hippies are going to stink way too bad! Wish I could help but maybe when you are closer to Fayetteville. Good to have you on here now!

At times in the past I've contacted local churches (not in the area of this trip) for shuttle help and they got a couple who needed a few $ to drive, or one time a small town minister near Mt. Ida drove for a donation to the building fund. Good deal for both of us.

Louis,

On many of my first 'solo' trips to the Caddo, I would just go park where I wanted to take out and wait for some good-natured souls to come along whom I might visit with about maybe a ride for me and my boat up the road, and it worked every time if I waited long enough. I think your idea is even better. I also once hitch-hiked back to Caddo Gap ,to the put-in, from Glenwood one early Sunday morning. The only cars on the highway that morning were all heading into town to church, then after a while one truck with father&son w/guns headed away from town, going squirrel hunting, did give me a lift :) Ah, the good old days.

Best Regards
Jim

Jim:

Thanks for the response. It brought a smile to my face thinking of those earlier years of paddling before it was such a popular entertainment. Not wishing for the "good old days", but the solitude of the rivers sure was nice. Good story!

I'd offer to help with the shuttle (fished the Saline a lot when I was younger) but alas, I have to work this weekend. :x Make sure you get your food sealed up good when you camp; the AGFC started reintroducing bears to the FNWR a few years back. Some of them (the bears) don't seem to understand that the refuge has boundaries, go figure  You shouldn't have to worry, but you never know.... Snakes will probably be your biggest concern.
