What are my chances of getting jury duty postponed?
What are my chances of getting jury duty postponed?
I have plans to go on the OS Buffalo trip June 9-13 and I just got a jury summons for the very same week
Any chance they will allow me to postpone? I'm not trying to shirk my civic duties, it's just that I've already paid for the trip and it's my first week off from teaching

I got a letter assigning me jury duty when I already had a trip to Alaska planned. I talked with the officials, explained the situation, and they moved my assignment to later in the assigned period. That happened in the early 1990s. I suggest you talk with the "powers that be". Hopefully some sort of accomodation can be worked out. Good Luck. I am also planning on joining the OS trip.

Call'em and tell'em. You have it all paid for and you have had plans for a long time. You can get out of it

Slim chance.
If you can feel good about it, tell em you have purchased airline tickets. Here in Arkansas your tour of duty lasts for six months or have served on an actual jury for a certain number of times. Maybe they can offer an alternative, like not calling you for the first week. if you go there and can talk to the courts clerk they can give you the full poop on the scoop. The big issue is missing out on the first formal meeting to initiate you to their protocol. The court clerk might can help you there.
I've been called up several times in the last Twenty-five plus years. I haven't and don't even want to do Federal jury duty. I hear they are real sticklers.
Good luck!

I agree with Zakkt. I have done this myself to get it postponed. I just explained that I had a vacation scheduled for "that part" of the time period and they gave me a postponement to later in the same period. You should be able to get out of it.

It may also make a difference which court you have duty with. I had to serve on jury duty for the county a few months back. For the county you are effectively "on call" for four months and at that you only serve one day a week and only if there is a case that week.
They said that as long as they knew in advance that you wouldn't be available in a certain week and that they had enough other people left in the "pool" that they didn't have a problem with people skipping a week here and there.
