Upper Mt Fork Question

Post by BooF4FooD » Mon May 18, 2009 8:36 pm

does anyone have a picture of this so called class 4 waterfall on the upper??? SW paddler says there is one, but i have serious doubts of that... Never been to the upper... lower too many times to count... im just curious, because me and some buddies have a cabin rented in Broken Bow for memorial day weekend, and they had a canoe trip planned... however, they called them today and told them that they are canceling the trip (cuz its on the lower and they are running it full blast) , but they said they would take them down the upper... after reading that on sw, its got me wondering if i should take the yak...

anywho... if anyone has pics of the upper... could you email them to me?? J L B L F X at aol dot com

There's nothing class IV on the Upper Mountain Fork. SW Paddler talks about something (IV) at the "Narrows" but I've never seen it. We paddled it two weeks ago and the Narrows were all flooded out from the lake backing up so we took out at FR 28000, 1/2 mile upstream from the Narrows. The lake is even higher now and I would expect that it will still be that way through this weekend. Expect some fairly long pools but with good rapids with catch on the fly surfers depending on the level. Best rapid is the "Toilet Bowl" rapid right below the Hwy. 4 bridge. Then look for several good standing wave trains scattered throughout the rest of the run, depending on the level. I prefer the level to be over 1000 c.f.s., but leisure canoeing would be alright down to 450 c.f.s.

It's a four foot pourover that you can c from the buffalo road at the narrows ,It's the last of a large rockgarden that starts ahalf mile up river . we have played there lots some surfholes.

There used to be a couple of canoe livery services (Geo. Fell, Little Charlie Umsted) that launched at either the Hwy 4 access in Smithville or the low water bridge over Rock Creek. There were also a couple from down around Broken Bow that launched their boats where ever they could find a spot. For shorter trips they launched from the old highway bridge over the Eagle Fork. They all took out at the low water slab at the Narrows (the road to Buffalo) (right now Broken Bow Lake is backed up to just below that bridge). I've done that stretch many times in a Coleman Crawdad - lots of smallmouth, Kentuckies and goggle eyes.

Not too many canoe rental companies put their Old Town Discovery 169s on Class IV water. In all fairness to canoeman, in flood the run through those rocks upstream from the bridge would probably be pretty interesting.

The best thing about that stretch of the MF is that you never see Obama rocks, Somali pirates, kayaks, or Ryan Viser.
