I really like the IRWP. They do good work. I especially enjoy their take that everyone is responsible for protecting water quality. I am not yet a member, but have been meaning to become one for a long time.
They don't just sit and blame a group or entity or engage in stereotyping when it comes to ideas of "who is the polluter". They just do stuff that try's to involve, motivate, and educate all stakeholders of the Illinois River Watershed to become a better steward. After all, most people are polluters by nature or ignorance.
The IRWP realizes that if blame is being handed out, and as long as people are blaming each other that zero to very little progress actually gets made towards protecting, improving, or maintaining a water resource.
More often than not it seems like most people are not aware of what their impact on their local watershed is or can potentially be. I admit that it took me a while to be a systems thinker and to realize that my "topping of auto fluids" is not a good thing and that it will eventually, more likely than not, end up in the Illinois River, Arkansas River, someone else's drinking water downstream, or the Ocean.
So now, no topping off the vehicle fluids so that they accidentally spill upon the pavement.
Seems like it takes me a while to things that are good sometimes even when the intentions are "to do something".
So, here's my thanks to the IRWP - a classy watershed partnership - and others in the same game for trying to motivate and educate those dwellers of the Illinois River Watershed or any other watershed.
