More boats stolen

Post by Zen B. » Thu May 14, 2009 11:48 am

This is becoming a record year for Arkansas. Two red Perception Torrent sit-on-top kayaks have been stolen from Byrd's. One is brand new and the other is a few seasons old.

Will keeps eyes open in the ouachitas. Did they have any outfitter markings on them and if so where? Maybe a new post that lists all missing boats?

The sit-ons had large yellow diamond stickers identifying them as Byrd's boats, but these have most certainly been removed.

Is everyone checking craigslist for these boats? Just an idea....would be a good place to sell them b/c only the owners would know that the description of a boat fits their missing one. Example:

If I see a "red dagger kingpin" ect for sale; I don't pay much attention b/c I don't own it and wouldn't know it if it passed me on the creek.

I think as for the raft that was found....rafts are more rare than kayaks and canoes on the rivers I frequent (which isn't many) so it's going to be noticed more easily.

Just my two cents....

The raft had an unusual modification that helped identify it, plus, the fact that the persons in possession showed up at a Class III/IV stream with no lifejackets was a dead give-away that something was fishy.

For these sit-on-tops - we can cross our fingers. There aren't many perception torrents in use; more common than rafts, but less common than canoes and WW "sit in" type kayaks. So if the thieves make the same kinds of mistakes (show up at a river where this boat stands out), or without proper gear, who knows, maybe we can get lucky again.

zen,

I dont know if this helps you at all but i saw an unusual sight yesterday. Driving through town after work i saw a red torrent on top of a light blue honda pilot suv parked in front of brick oven. I've lived here for seven and half years and have never seen a torrent driving through town except on a non-local vehicle.

I'm sure there are probably a few around town owned by buffalo, piney, and spring weekend warriors... but this thing looked brand new and i thought to myself, "who would buy a red sit on top RIGHT now?" it's been creek season... not lazy float season.

If a light blue honda suv was ever seen around exit 20... let me know. If i see them in town again i do not mind whatsoever confronting them.

Thanks everybody! Just a quick update: One of the sit on tops (the new one) was spotted the other day and successfully recovered. More details coming once additional leads are explored...

Keep a watchful eye for all the missing boats.
