Retrofit help needed
Retrofit help needed
My hubby and I would like to add drain plugs to our Perception Keeowee and Mainstream 'yaks. Where do we find such and can a pair of do-it-yourself-challenged numnums
muddle thru' it and still have floatable boats?! Or should we just keep it simple and drill holes and stuff corks in them

Here is a thread on paddling describing how others did it.

Re: Retrofit help needed
Mtngal,
I have installed many drain plugs in rec. kayaks over the years and it's a pretty easy job. I do like the Harmony plug kits very much as they contain all the parts you need and clear instructions for someone who hasn't done it before. If you are close enough to go to Ouachita Outdoor Outfitters in Hot Springs, they always have them in stock.
On rec. kayaks with no foam bulkhead behind the seat (kayak open all the way to the back) then you just need to mount one in the stern end, just like a WW kayak. With rec. kayaks with bulkhead, I mount two, one in the stern end and the other just in the front of the bulkhead and over on one side or the other. When you mount them just be sure to have the right sized drill bits for the main hole and the screw holes, also have some clear silicone sealant. When you are ready to mount the base fixture, just add a small bead around the underside then wipe away the excess after you tighten up the screws.
Best Regards
Jim

Re: Retrofit help needed
If you're near Hot Springs, you could probably get one at Ouachita Outdoor outfitters. With a little sweet-talking, you might even get help installing it.
If you're not near them, and can't get similar help at an outfitter closer to home, then you can buy the parts here:

I personally prefer not to have a drain plug; too many people try to unscrew mine when I'm not looking. I have no idea why...
