Re: hogan creek anyone
My family lives on the Cadron and I have floated Cove Creek numerous times. I have yet to do Hogan though. Three of us are going tomorrow around 2 or so but have never done it before. We are novices, only sit on top kayaks but stupid enough to try anything. We will do some class III in our ghetto boats. I completely understand if you are wanting to go with someone that knows what they are doing and can play etc. No gurantees on the exact time either. We live right there so we may go at the drop of a hat.
I would love to get a little info on the run if you have it though. I know the put in and all but just wasn't sure about any details. I got the info from the ARWhitewater page.
Also curious as to why no info is available on Cove creek above Martinville? Is it just not floatable? Seems like if you can get a good run out above that section, why can't you make a solid run from 92 to Mallet Town?
I appreciate anything you can offer.

Hi guys,
I did Hogan a few years ago. It starts out quite small, tight, lots of turns, and also LOTS of wood in the creek especially at the beginning. Don't go around any blind curves unless you can see a safe spot you can pull over...otherwise best to hop out and scout as no doubt you'll encounter some trees down. As it continues it picks up speed and widens out more. I remember it being quite a fun run, although I was just starting out at the time, so perhaps I was more easily impressed!
Here's some pics:

We did it earlier in the year as you can see from the pics...with the leaves out, it's going to be a lot more brushy along the creek right now. Post a trip report if you go!
Coogan (aka Captain Aleve) and Chester are definitely the ones who will have the 411 on Cove and Hogan....
Cheers,
Heather

I've heard that into every life a little of it must fall,
but you'll never catch me complaining about too much of that southern rain.

Re: hogan creek anyone
Looks like it will take a visual check to see if there is enough water in Hogan. If you have enough water to navigate the first rapid at the 92 bridge, you can paddle the whole thing. Look at the take-out bridge to be sure the water is not too high, that is can you paddle safely through the brush just upstream of the bridge where Hogan joins Pine Mountain Creek.
Hogan is fun, but it is full of strainers. Several large trees have fallen across the creek and have to be portaged (this report is several years old). The creek spreads out through several willow covered gravel bars after you pass the half way point. We have paddled around the edge of one, but it is a very tight channel with a hard left turn that requires good skills. Missing the 4 feet wide line puts you into fallen trees or brush that has current running through it. I have never been able to paddle through another willow bar below the first one; we've had to carry through part of it. There is strong current in part of this one, running down a narrow channel that looks open at the top before it goes around a blind turn. It is not open, trees are across it. You can paddle through any other willowy areas. There are unforgettable rapids in the last half of the run. A lot of water in the creek would make the willowy areas pretty dangerous, so be careful.
Cove put-in: I've only started at highway 124, but you can start upstream at the Hogan Creek take-out bridge. The take out for the lower section is on the Cadron at the Mallett Town bridge. We usually park at the cemetery just around the bend on the west side of the creek if it looks like they are not going to be having a funeral. The run is pretty, not hard, some good rapids, lots of small ones.

Re: hogan creek anyone
Thanks for the info guys. We are planning on checking it out and I will give an update if we make the run. Based on Cadron levels it should be prime.
Thanks again
