Trees in Little Mulberry Creek

Post by Lifejacket » Tue May 05, 2009 8:36 am

Greg, Forrest, Andy, and myself followed some guys up from the bottom take out at the mulberry to the low water bridge at Spoke Plant on Sunday, decided level was to high for some of our comfort. Went back down to the first bridge across the creek and with the encouragement of Budlight  decided to go ahead and try from the low water bridge to the first bridge and see how it was. Started off pretty nice, but it was not far before we encountered the first of many portages due to trees that cross the entire river. Before the day was over I lost count of how many times we portaged. My advice on this one if you can not see a good pool or eddy below the rapid from the top better scout because they are the ones that not only have one but sometimes two or three trees.
It was a nice little run at high water put on at 1:45 just after the Mulberry crested at 10.28' for the day, took until 5:00 for us to get down to the first bridge. I took a swim after trying to punch a big hole with no success, I am blaming it on Greg because he got sucked back in and I thought he was intentionally surfing in front of me. Andy who is still fairly new, and it was his first trip of the year in a new boat with a strange heavy paddle, had quite a bit of trouble with rocks just below the surface, strong eddy lines, and cross current, took a few swims as well slowing us down a little. I think his biggest problem of the day was that he got intimidated and quit enjoying himself. Once he gets a little more experience and better boat control, he is going to be a good paddler and have a blast.
As a side note, I thought the rapid just just above the bridge we used to take out was the best of the Day

little mulberry was at a good level yesterday. we floated from spoke plant (i think) to the first bridge you come to after turning off hwy 215. i only had to get out the boat 2 or 3 times for downtrees.

we never found the low water bridge at spoke plant. how did y'all get there? I think we may have seen it on river left (on a tributary creek) about 100 yards down stream from where we put in. we put in on river right where county rd 6151 came to a stop at the creek.

This is where we took out "Little Mulberry Cr CR408" lat=35.7230972686, lon=-93.6273232854. This is where we put on "Little Mulberry Cr CR407" lat=35.7665868974, lon=-93.5892267264. Hope this helps otherwise I will have to cross reference my map book.
