"or just take a canoe trip to the Buffalo River" in lieu of flowers is the family's request to honor Ruston, Louisiana's Chick Ellis in his obituary this weekend. Chick was the "Guru of Canoe" or "Mr. Canoe" in north Louisiana since the early 1970's, promoting paddling, owning numerous boats including an Old Town OTCA, organizing races and events, writing newspaper columns, promoting canoesport, and recruited many dozens to paddling (including me), inspired some to become guides. He ran tiny "flood only" creeks in north La 30 years ago, made annual trips to the Buffalo for over 20 years, had countless admirers, paddled well into his 70's. "We appreciate his amazing life and the influence he has had on so many people he dearly loved" sums his life.
If heaven is "heaven" there's got to be paddling up there. I hope to paddle with him again someday. A wonderful man and paddler!
