Wister Wave

Post by rxh012 » Fri Apr 17, 2009 10:46 pm

I'm thinking about heading to the wave on sunday if anyone is interested in meeting up (assuming they're still releasing enough from the dam). I was out there today at just under 3,000 cfs and it was a good surf. I had trouble getting into the wave on surfer's right though. Aside from dropping in upstream I'm not sure how to get on it. Anyway, let me know if anyone is interested in meeting there.

Please do not put in anywhere upstream or anywhere near the spillway. The Army corps are strongly against that.Put in down below the wave and paddle up to it in the eddy's and enjoy. Ohh also be very courteous to the fishermen and let them cast for shad whenever they want so we have good P.R. Thanks

Please do not put in up stream from the hole/wave . that and to keep it free from someone getting hurt. cuz, that's when they will keep us out . the river left hole can be accesed with practice and river right is spincity got some loops and cartwheels in on that side also . this is a good level , still fast, but good.Let's keep it clean . looking for an event there pretty soon, the corp. just asks that when we do 'cleaning up is a must. the event will be in the spring no date wet. and will be held for the big wave 4600 , still freindly . will keep you posted.

We were surfing there once then someone started throwing shad nets in the same eddy we were in. Of course we just ignored them and their threat to our safety. Now my truck is not well liked.
It could be worse, it could stop raining

We usually respect the shad catchers and just stay out of their way until they get through. sometimes, we can even tell them where to throw cause we have a better view! lol
anyway, we try to respect them and they are all new to us surfing, but there are a lot of people who like to fish and watch us. and a lot of people will stop and watch as they drive by, but the shad catchers usually don't stay there long enough to bother or get in anybody's way of surfing.
and no one usually fishes REALLY close to that wave anyway, it's usually downstream some. Don't let that stop you please. we will all find a good comfort zone and get along.

So you guys were the paddlers that the fishermen were complaining to me about. No offense man but please try to not be rude or ignore the fishermen.Instead I challenge you to embrace these people and respect them with politeness. These fishermen have been fishing the Wister spillway for decades and we need to befriend everyone we can. We do not need the fishermen going and complaining to the Army Corp. of Engineers. This is a sweet place to surf when it is big and I don't want to lose our previleges so be cool, ya dig. Jason

My name's Rory. I'm thinking about heading to the wave on thursday and/or friday assuming its at the right level. Let me know if anyone else might be heading that way. I tried to stay out of the fisherman's way when they came by. Most of them just laughed and told me I was nuts  , cast a few times and left.

It's common sense but it bears saying again: we paddlers are outsiders in most of the places where we play. We are guests of the local people who live and work in those places. If we don't go out of our way to be good guests - to treat the local communities and people with respect and kindness (even if we don't understand why they treat us the way they do sometimes) - then we are probably not going to be invited back.

In other words, put access before fun and pride if you like paddling these places.

This is an issue at Wister, at spillways, small creeks, big creeks - basically everywhere we want to paddle. Keep in mind, a few bad encounters with local folks can shut it down for all of us.

Thanks Jason... And Rory, can't wait to meet you. Ricky failed to mention that i also live within ten minutes of the wave and try to keep people posted as well. I know i am a woman, but i have surfed it too and have some good insight also. SOOOOOO, I am another contact person too. :poke:
Jason is an excellent person to listen to when it comes to getting along with the fishermen. Fish, you are very right about the respect and how we are outsiders, hopefully, one day that will change.

Jason, if i can make it out there today, I will. Thanks for letting me know. Rory, for sure on thursday and friday i can be there. my number is 918.413.3632...Jason you have my number already.

Hey Peeps, if you are on my facebook page you can see wister as at almost 4000cfs. I posted it this morning.. I am soooo excited!!
