Cossatot Maiden Voyage (Saturday May 9, 2009)

Post by Walter Felton » Thu Apr 16, 2009 2:17 pm

Cossatot Maiden Voyage

Assuming there is water on the Cossatot on Saturday May 9 2009 the Cossatot maiden voyage tradition will continue. As time draws nearer I will post updates on the message board but here are the basics. If you would like to try you newly learned skills from canoe school on the Cossatot, with some addition support, read on. Please contact Walter Felton by e-mail (wfelton@ipa.net) or by phone 870-863-5704 (W) or 870-862-0934 (H) before 9 PM, to get your name on the list and get details about meeting times and places. I will need to hear from people that are interested so that we have enough support boaters for the trip and to ensure that you have the skills and equipment necessary for the trip. I will send individual questionnaires to participants to assess skills and equipment and will reserve the right to ask an individual to not participate if in my opinion they are not prepared. Also everyone will be required to sign an ACA waiver which I will send in advance to ensure that each person has “time to consider the risk” before signing the waiver. There will be a $5 fee for non American Canoe Association members to cover the cost of insurance. You will need your ACA number to avoid this charge. If you are a Cossatot veteran and would like to help support this trip (as many of you have done in the past) please contact me as well to get the details on meeting times and places. I will not respond to questions about the trip on the board. Please contact me directly by e-mail of phone.

Awww, heck, Walter, this is one of those events that no one really wants to miss if they can help it! It at least deserves a sticky!

I had to call three times yesterday before I decided I wasn't just hearing it wrong. Then call again later to be sure the gage was functioning, and not just "stuck".

But right now, its really shaping up.

While we're moving into a summer pattern (could fall faster than predicted), but with more rain in the forecast (could still be too high), at this point it is looking like a best-ever first timer's level is also within the realm of possibilities. It won't be a "too low, let's do it anyway for the scenery" float, but it won't be too high for those first timers either. Just enough to get a feel for "the real" Cossatot...

At this point it looks like the trip is a go. We are basically booked up on first timers but could use a few more support boaters if possible.

I wanna say 10 am at the low water bridge by the visitor's center & 10:30 at the falls. Just to be safe, I'd try for 9:30 at the visitor's center. It's about a 2.5 to 3hr trip from r-ville if you go through mt ida and glenwood. hth, ty

Actually, if you instead said 9am at the take out below the visitor center, then you'd be right!!!

9am meet time! Early early early! :D
