I was 20 sumthin in the 80's before a stint in Virginia Beach brought me to realize how different we are in ways. Met folks from Australia, UK, Germany and others and the culture differences hit me in the face.... which was a good thing. Things funny to us not so to them, vice versa... just different attitudes on lots of issues. Was a great thing to learn. I had seen Benny Hill so thought, yeah they are a bit weird but they speak english......

When Marlo and I were in Germany a couple of years ago, visiting relatives, touring, etc. we met the then 16 year-old son of her cousins who live in Karlshrue. At any rate Andreas was a delight for a teenager and was one of our best translators with his older family members.
This coming August, Andreas, a pharmacy student at the University of Heidelberg will be coming to Yuma, Az. :shock: for a month exchange program. Although Marlo and I aren't hosting him, we are certainly looking forward to him staying with us some before he heads home in September, we definitely plan to take him kayaking. I'm thinking Remmel Dam to Rockport may be the only thing running at that time but I think it's a cool and pretty trip. It's gotta be an oasis compared to Yuma :)

The whole exchange student experience can be life-changing. My daughter's in Beijing this semester as a result, and my wife and I have a couple of (unofficial) "adopted" Chinese young'uns. Very rewarding experience.
