Shoot, thought you'd found my missing one on Richland (brick red, BTW).
I (now) have (half a pair of) Z2s and have loved them. Never had Z1s, but pretty sure the toe strap adds a lot more stability. Not a big deal on flat terrain, but I've boulder-scrambled/creek-hiked and the Z2 did great. No blisters, though I'll bet it could happen if you put on a new pair and took off on a long walk.

Harlan,
I had a pair of the Z-2's and didn't care for the toe strap. It might have made them a little more stable, but I felt that the strap pulled on my big toe in a weird way. Wasn't comfortable. I sold them and got some Z-1's.

The toe rocks. You're not buying real chacos unless you get them with the toe.

Had both. IMO, Z-2! The bigger the foot, the more you need the toe strap, otherwise, the straps can work too far back on the top of your foot and the toe end catches on stuff. Me, size 11, and the left foot took some getting used to. Chaco says you can wear Z-2's without using the toe strap, but I've never wanted to try.
