Enviro History class on the water 4-25 (update 4-17)
One of my classes is Buffalo-bound for April 24-25. Like last year, we hope to paddle. We also hope we are going late enough in the year that we won't be hampered by floods. We'll see. Anyway, if the monthly Buffalo trip is going that weekend, feel free to contact me about details to join us.

Re: Enviro History class is trying again to get on the water
Kim, I may be able to join you. We have not set up a Buffalo River trip for this month and if its an open invitation we might follow your lead this month. I have just completed the Leave No Trace Trainer's Course and I now have a whole new perspective. I will also be assisting a Master Educator's Course the 1st weekend in May.
Will families of all ages be allowed?

Richard, I could not have done it last time without you!
Yes, families are permitted, but no children under seven on the water. (Seven is generally the minimum age that the outfitters permit.) Beverage policy is similar to Richard's usual monthly trip policy. (Ask me if you have questions.) As before, I have no clue how many people will be there, but I know we have fewer experienced paddlers. I'll have a small trip fee that should be paid by next Tuesday, so I can purchase food Wednesday. I'm waiting to see how many people are going before I figure out how I'll cover boat rental costs.
Feel free to PM me about more details.
As of 4/14, it looks like we may have ten or more students.

Total now may be 17 with friends and family, with the possibility of going to 21 total with our group. (Tuesday is the deadline for deposits.)
We have had a generous offer from a nearby volunteer fire department to cook dinner for us on Friday night, and I'm thinking it's too good to refuse. I'll be doing Dutch Oven breakfast casserole on Saturday morning. It's a particular favorite of several people in class.
As of now, we will be meeting at Buffalo Point during the day and into the evening on Friday, April 24. We'll paddle April 25, still most likely Buffalo Point to Rush.

Richard, does Highway 14 to Rush sound reasonable to you? It should be about five hours with goofing off and good flow. Thoughts?
Re: Enviro History class on the water 4-25 (update 4-17)
Hwy 14 to Rush is 9 miles. At ample flow with no paddling that is about 5 hours. My recommended weekend float on this stretch is to camp at Buffalo Point Friday night, float on Saturday to Toney or Bice Bend and camp. Take out at Rush on Sunday AM. With a one day float, this makes for a nice leisure float with time to stop along the way for lunch near the Devils Tea Table and stopping at Bice bend or below to swim and surf. Spending time at Rush in the afternoon is a must.

Some folks can't make it until well into Friday evening, and everyone is headed out Saturday afternoon. (Ah, college students and commitments!) We've got to do whatever we do in a day, and it seemed like--since we'll land at Rush--that Highway 14 to Rush gave us the most options for seeing the river and historic sites.
Knowing the schedule, what do you think?

No lounging around Saturday morning. Shuttles need to be done quickly and early. If shuttles are done and everyone's on the river by 10 am you should be in great shape. We need a bit more rain.
Speaking of shuttles. How many will be bringing their own canoes and how many will be renting?

Re: Enviro History class on the water 4-25 (update 4-17)
It'll almost all be rentals--or maybe all. I am waiting until Tuesday (deposit day) to confirm with the outfitter. I could try to get them to launch from the campground, but I doubt if they would. Alternate would be Maumee or even Spring Creek to Highway 14, but then we lose the trip to Rush. Thoughts?
Re: Enviro History class on the water 4-25 (update 4-17)
Hwy 14 to Rush should be the way to go. BTW there will be a lot of other canoes on this section of river but that should not be a problem.

Seeing a lot of other river users should be a good thing! It'll put outdoor recreation in better perspective as an historic and current use of the rural landscape.

Rodger and I are going to be camping with Kim at Buffalo Point then paddle with them for most of the trip. We plan to spend Saturday night on a gravel bar. Anyone wanting to join us on the gravel bar Sat night is welcome.

Like with last year's trip, I don't see how I could have had the field trip without Richard--and now Rodger K. too! Thank you, thank you, thank you to both of you! Wes, I'm sorry I did not get to see you more too!
