[EDITED TO ADD: Okay - so some moderation happened on this thread, so now my rant seems pretty arbitrary and well, crazy, but suffice to say I was responding here to criticisms about the ACC and what we are doing (or not doing) about Cadron Creek access. I still would like to challenge more people to get involved and for concerned folks to come out to Tuesday 3/24 Central Chapter meeting to hear more about this issue. Thanks, crazy Heather aka Lupe]
Alright, this is a bit out of character for me, but here I go anyway...
Bob, with all due respect, you don't seem to be aware of what ACC members are doing about the loss of access at Cadron Creek. Just because you personally haven't attended a meeting where this has been discussed, or been involved with the dozen or so club members who have been working on this in one way or another, does NOT mean the ACC is not doing anything. And Zach is right,
honey, not vinegar!!!
There seems to be some misconception (this part is not aimed just at you, but in general) about who exactly the ACC is. All the ACC is, is a group of paddlers, all of whom have busy lives, families, schedules, etc., and who really, really like to get out and paddle whenever we have some free time. Now on top of that, there are a number of ACC members who ALSO try to eek out some more spare time here and there to actually volunteer to help the club run...whether that is serving as a chapter president and running monthly meetings, or trying to keep the membership database organized, or volunteering to run major events each year like Whitewater School, Rec School, or Rendezvous, or, yes, working on RIVER ACCESS issues. A lot of this
work - and while yes, we are all volunteers - it IS
work to keep everything running - is frankly not always fun, glamorous, or exciting, and I think it's obvious it can be quite thankless, but we do it because we love paddling and we enjoy sharing paddling with others and we believe the organized club has more strengths than weaknesses (note that I didn't say we don't have weaknesses, and there's a lot of things we certainly want to get better at doing, but we believe the good still outweighs the bad!)
I find it frustrating to see people come on OUR ACC message board, which the ACC has chosen to allow to be open to the general public, many of whom are not even ACC club members, and use OUR message board to criticize us!
If anyone out there, member or not, thinks the ACC could do more, you are undoubtedly right!!! But I challenge you to then JOIN the club if you are not already a member, talk to your chapter president or any of the board members, and find out who in the club needs help, and then VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME to help make things better!
Loss of access to Cadron Creek is indeed a terrible loss to the paddling community, the central chapter in particular. Steps ARE being taken, but I can guarantee NOTHING is going to get done as fast as we all wish. If you want to learn more about what is being done, please come to the Central Chapter meeting tomorrow at the Oyster Bar and I will ask Mike Stanley that we set aside time as a part of the meeting so that those of us who have been working on this can share what we know and have done so far.
I apologize for my exasperated tone! Rant over!
