Mill Creek at "Y" City

Post by CSH » Sun Mar 22, 2009 9:46 pm

Has anyone paddled this creek? It looks quite nice. There are some nice drops behind the old gas station on 71, and you can see it from the bridge in town. It appears to have decent access from 270 as you go east of Y City as well.

I think I know the one you're talking about. If you're coming through Y City from the South, there's a little gas station on the left and a nice pool behind it where the creek flows through. Wade Ward (Wiz on this board) and I used to meet his Mom there since it was halfway between where we went to school and Fort Smith where he was from. Never will forget the time we had both of our dogs with us. My dog was a pup at the time and got stuck at the bottom of a steep smooth large boulder and couldn't get out. Wade went down close to help her up and his 130 lb. Weimeraner got a little freaked out and worried about him. She ended up taking a few steps too far and slid down the rock and slammed into Wade knocking him right into the water. Went from having my pup just whimpering a little to Wade and 2 dogs splashing around, hahahaha.

Anyways, it looked like it would be nice if it got a lot of water coming through it.

Monsoon, what do you remember about the run. Looked II+ to III to me. And the access looked good.

Well I remember it being pretty wild, but that was when i was a lot younger abd had a big ole 16 foot canoe. I think class III(-) is about right.....when its up. I think it come out of the Fourche somewhere down there. But yeah there are some good play spots, even if you just get out and walk behind the gas station and play around.

Jim Id like to give it a go. I dont know about gauges. Probably just 2 inches of rain in the last 24 hours in Y City gets it cranking. Probably could look at the uppermost Ouachita or South Fourche La Fave gauge, and if it is high and rising Mill Creek is probably good. I can look in to it some more later. If it rains Friday, do you want to try it Sat.???

I'll have two other paddlers with me Sat. This creek might be a little over their heads right now. Would prefer a longer run too considering that there should be several to choose from. Won't decide till early Sat morn where we're heading.
