GET IT Sat March 21 - "surprize" rain in Newton County

Post by Cowper » Sat Mar 21, 2009 9:38 am

I can't make it today, but several are headed north. Apparently EFLB and possibly Richland watersheds got hit by rain that was NOT in any forecast. Get it if you can.

It looks like the boxley and richland gages are jumping. Wish we still had rain gages up there! ty

Can someone post the link to the Buffalo River rain gauges? The ones in Fish's description for the Hailstone don't seem to work anymore. Thanks!

Well, us Ark-LA-Tex boaters are loaded up and ready to roll, but the Richland gauge is going up extremely slow. Seems like normally when it gets hit hard enough the gauge goes up pretty quick. Also, it kinda looks like the approaching rain is getting pushed down more towards central arkansas. Anyone have any concrete info on what's going on w. Richland before we drive 6 hours??

I think Scott may be trying to tell us it's a NO go.

Wish I could give you some concrete info Ryan, but I have only talked to a few folks who talked to a few folks that were out that way (things didn't sound as good as they looked based on sheer precipitation). NWS has released several forecasts this afternoon that say rain will continue to diminish across Eastern Oklahoma or rain will stay mainly south of I-40. Don't know that I would bank on anymore rain in the Richland parts (at least tonight).

Hopefully someone will post some type of visual.

The radar lied on the estimated rain totals. It was accurate for the area that got the most rain, but the totals were in the 1-2 inches instead of the 3-6 that the radar estimated.

The East Fork Little Buffalo got the most rain and a few of us managed to make a low-low water run on it. Richland is still creeping up, but expect it to crest before midnight and be extremely low for boating on Sunday.

But on the bright side, they are primed for the next round of rain (as long as it isn't more than a month away)

Nice. Is EFLB similar in difficulty to Upper Richland? Or is it a step up?

I never thought I'd be willing to drag my boat in a mile (uphill) to paddle a creek, but I did and it was worth it. :D

I'll let someone else answer you're question Ryan since I've had very limited experience on both. The two creeks seem pretty comparable to me, but at different water levels I'm sure you'd get different answers.

I'm sad to report, the NPS pulled funding for the rain gage system. It's gone.

I think EFLB (2nd and 3rd gorges) is pretty similar in difficulty to Richland with EFLB maybe being a little bit harder. Different feels though, EFLB is more wide open and not as pool drop in nature, so at least the 2nd and 3rd gorges are more continuous then Richand (but that can differ depending on the level of Richland).
