I remember that when I first started paddling Big Piney, there was a jeep trail to the creek that took off of the Long Pool road about a half mile downstream. In fact, we camped there a couple of times. I haven't noticed if that road was still accessible the last few times I've been there. Can anyone tell me if that trail is still open? Was thinking about taking out there the next time I go. Thanks in advance.

Hey, Terry, John Barton here. Just saw your post and wanted to say howdy. Some of the other old school guys and I were talking about you just last weekend. I was recalling the first time I ran the Numbers with you and you impressed us with your open boat roll after turning over and waiting it out, tucked under your boat for about half the length of #1. That was probably about 1981 or 2. Scary! (the years, that is).
I'm thinking that road is blocked or gated, but I'm sure you'll get a more authoritative answer.

Terry, think I know where you talking about but I believe the road itself is blocked off for some reason. I remember camping down there many years ago. I know it's not NFS property in there since a homeless family was camped right at the edge of LP area. This would have been between the area you're talking about and the boundary. Once again, many years ago.

Re: Alternate take-out on Big Piney?
I'm afraid you guys are probably right. I'll have to take a look & see.
Dang, John. Was it that long ago? I imagine that I did kind of freak you guys out with that long "turtle" I did on #1. You were all probably thinking about the paramedics at that time. Sorry about that. I've always wondered what the CFS was that day. I do remember that the level at the old Scott's bridge was 4+'. I'm guessing the CFS must have been between 2500 & 3000. That was some BIG & PUSHY water. I remember being out of control most of the day. I'm thinking that Pam got some videos of that run. Might have to see if I can talk Dale & her into digging them out for me sometime when I'm at Richland. I can't remember for sure who was with us that day. I believe it was you, Dale, Tommy Young, Mike Haughtenger(sp), and I think there was another "Mike". And Tommy Winger was possibly there. Or he at least hooked up with us for the Roaring Fork. Anyway, that day was a day to remember!

Oh great sage of the Kickapoo prairie - why would a man with a history of paddling, pushing, pulling, and dragging UP from Long Pool to Surfing Rapid feel the need to ask this question?

P.S. Do they grow taters on that prairie?
P.P.S. I will be in Springfield on March 31-April 1. I may be working well into the night, but if not I'll buy you and Cindy a cold

Don't know, Davidbob. Just sounds like taking out at Long Pool might be getting kind of expensive, if you know what I mean.
