Mill Creek near Combs AR???
Mill Creek near Combs AR???
I was watching the Baker Creek video and found this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jjXkUtj ... re=related" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . It has a nice looking creek with a waterfall (shows creek from time 42-51) .
Does anyone know anything about Mill Creek near Combs, AR (off of hwy 16 near the intersection of hwy 23) or the creek that is seen in this video?

Rob - I don't know anything about paddling the creek but it is one of the few authorized trails in the state for motocross/atv. Geo.

Rob,
That description is not the one of the "mill creek" you are interested in, but you probably already knew that. That sure does look like a good drop in the video. Definently interested in a hike too check her out. Do you think its been descented yet? Maybe we should talk to Mike T. since he's kind of local to that area.

Thanks Paddledog, but this Mill Creek is not the one off of hwy 215. Side note - does anyone know how many Mill Creeks there are in Arkansas?http://www.ozarkpages.com/cgi-bin/crfind.pl?Mill
Here is a write up on the creek.
This Mill Creek is off of hwy 23, several miles north of Cass, near the junction of hwy 16 and 23.
I'm not even sure if that is the river in question from the video, but it is in that Mill Creek area.

It crosses Hwy. 16. west of the 16/23 junction. This is White River valley. Pam and I hiked on Mack Mountain this weekend which is just east of this mill creek.Alot of tree damage and no clean up efforts noticed.

Rob,
Looked at this one often on the maps, seem to remember it's dendritic at the top then grades out as you proceed downstream. Talked to lots of folk who bike it or run ATV's in the area. Conversation almost always started with a mention of "Mill Creek" (the one near Fern) and the bikers and 4-wheeler folk always think I'm talking about the "Mill Creek" in the video. I do know of two creeks in the vicinity that do have some good stuff...
Regarding your question about how many "Mill Creeks" are out there, just a tad more than, "Indian" and "Hurricane" creeks. Seriously, the frequency of those three names is probably the highest of any creek names in the Eastern U.S.

Re: Mill Creek near Combs AR???
That falls is on the creek that flows down into the Mulberry on the east side of Hwy 23. Dog and I were the first to run it that I've heard of. It's a nice 10 to 12 footer with a cool approach. Last I heard, a landowner on the lower end of the creek who was hostile to boaters. That one fall is the only thing on the creek anyway worth mentioning - the rest is class 2 with lots of trees - we had several portages. About a 2 mile carry in too to get to the upper part. Our verdict was that it's not worth it. If you really have to run the falls, I'd talk to Mulberry Mountain - they have a trail you could drag down and back up that goes right to the falls. Private property all the way, and the back up part will suck - but probably will suck less than the tree jams and possible landowner confrontation at the bottom. A four wheeler shuttle down and back up would be the best bet, if you can get permission from MM.

Fishmus, aren't you describing Mountain creek? Regardless, I spoke to the people at mulberry Mountain when I through there last (about a month ago). I had some folks with me who wanted to know more about Walkarusa(sp?) and the harvest fest (great festival if you like blue grass). We met one of the owners and the lady who painted the way cool posters for the festival and were having a dandy time learning how they built that barn-size stage. At some point in the conversation the older lady (I believe one of the owners) informed us about the trail to the falls and I happened to mention we ran the creek years ago.
I'm still not sure if she was receptive to the idea of running those creeks or not, but she sure had a funny look on her face! I guess the landowner issue may explain her reaction...or maybe she thought we were crazy! Either way, I made sure she knew we put on in the national forest and took out at the bridge. She definitely made no indication that we shouldn't do it again, only said she'd never heard of anyone running it before and was very nice! She even gave me a deal on her daughter-in-laws artwork and some t-shirts, so I believe I made a good impression:)
The festival is being held during August this year, so maybe the hurricanes won't blow all the poker tents away! Oh, check out the website, they've got a pic of David Robertson on the advertisement with his, radical t-shirt! Got to have boater representation at these things! They're gonna have: Fayetteville's own Cletus got shot, Eureka's Mountain Sprout, the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Big Smith, Split Lip Rayfield, Dirt Foot etc. Buncha good hill-music! Oh, and watch out for the Mountain Sprouts if you don't like funny, x-rated blue grass, they'll bring it!

Yep, sorry I didn't mention it - that's actually Mountain Creek, but I'm fairly sure it's the waterfall there. Still not a good idea to run this one due to potential for upset landowners. Plenty of better creeks to run anyway and it would be great to keep from pissing off the landowners in that area.
