Direction to Cossatot

Post by SteveGabbard » Thu Mar 12, 2009 3:50 pm

I won't be paddling but would like to run down and check out the tot this weekend. Could someone give me the best directions from Mount Ida? I would specifically like to look at the falls.

Thanks

Take 8 to glenwood. Head south to mufreesboro. Hook west (right) onto 84 to langley. Goto athens, umpire, toward wickes. Slow down about 4 miles after umpire and take the dirt road to the falls. It's marked and heads off on the right (north). It's kinda hard to tell someone who's never seen it where exactly it is. I bet cowper has gps coordinates for it. If you go to the bridge, you've gone too far. The falls road goes off from the main road at a slight angle. It's well used. There should be signs showing the way. Drive carefully as there will be many people on the road. IIRC, it should be about 5 miles to the falls. hth, ty

Also if you keep going a little farther towards wickes (instead of turning onto the dirt road) you'll cross the Tot and there will be a visitor center on your left. Should be able to find a map there if you have any trouble finding the falls.

If you really want to play safe and make it super-easy, then after you leave Umpire going West, drive a few miles and then find a safe place to pull over. Get there by 9:15 to 9:30. Within 5 minutes, a vehicle with kayaks on top will buzz past you headed West. Hit the gas and follow them. The Falls is like a black hole in the boating universe, and pulls all boats toward the center; all you have to do is follow.

I found a nice map of the area and can't seem to find it now. Is everyone camping at Ed Banks or the Falls? If it's Ed Banks, could someone throw up some directions? I'll check back via my phone. I'm on my way...somewhere!!! lol

Most of the campers will be at the low water bridge just up from the falls. Follow the road on up past the turn in to the falls. Short trip to the bridge. Camping is free here. You will see the familiar vehicles of the hard cores. There is a pretty new legitimate campground just across the bridge and to the right. Few bucks a night for a camp pad and some usually pretty nasty vault toilets.
Good chance of camping at the falls campground considering the weather. Cruise the falls campground first, Might be a shuttle happening just then. always take advantage of a pre arranged shuttle. You can repay the favor later by running someone back to the top for their vehicle.

Have mucho fun and get it all over you.
