Osage Gorge needs help

Post by hollohead » Thu Mar 05, 2009 8:18 am

Just wanted to inform on the condition of the Osage Gorge, and warn paddlers to avoid the creak until I am able to spend a weekend cleaning ice debris. I know it is not paddled much, but I was hoping to make it easier with on site level reports. Since the creek starts at such a high elevation, the ice storm created a tangled mess. Luckily, most of it is small stuff and hopefully there will be less problems as the creek drops in elevation. I have only checked the section from the put-in down to the Mushroom at the edge of our property. Hopefully, as the creek drops and opens up the damage wont be as bad. The Osage runs more than peaple think, and could be enjoyed more with better info.

Thanks Hollohead, much appreciated!
Maybe a few could get out and help with the clearing and any on-site reports would be great!
I know there have been times when groups went there and the creek was too high to run and they drove a long way to get there. It has probably been too low a few times also.
Hope you're right about the wood at the lower elevations.
Anyway, great job and thanks again! :D

Wow, that would be so awesome. Our place is 6/10ths of a mile from the put-in and provides the only easy way into the upper gorge. Laps of the upper gorge with a five minute shuttle will be possible. I will post later on when I'm going in.

What a great thing to offer to report the creek level to us! We don't have any way of knowing it's really running, which is probably why it doesn't get run as often. We'd love to coordinate with you on cutting out the wood in the gorge too. If you'd like to email me off the board, it's fish@ozarkpages.com - I'll get a group up there for sure to help clear wood and also talk about maybe figuring out a way to gauge it accurately and get the level out, maybe put it up on the OWP.

Thanks for your help holohead!

Hollo, what's your favorite barley pop (beer)? I'd be glad to drop a case by whenever I'm in the area. Thanks for being a great citizen to the boating community!

I am hardly a great citizen, just a lowly boater working the Tom Sawyer angle. It sure is fun clearing out this here crik! The creek is mostly above my skill level, but maybe someday I'll get there. My plan is to go into the gorge Saturday march 14th, unless of course we have good water. It would be cool to show off our spot overlooking the gorge to some paddlers. As for gageing the level, I am not on the mountain all the time yet. But, I bet that I can get my buddy Scott at the creekhouse @the put-in to give visuals until we make the move within the year. And I'll supply the beer.
