Easter weekend on the Cossatot

Post by donnabug » Mon Mar 02, 2009 9:27 pm

Some Houston Canoe Club members would like to come to Arkansas and paddle some rivers close to Texas - like the Cossatot. However, it has been either a long time for some of us or too few times to feel comfortable getting on these East Arkansas Rivers without someone more knowledgeable.
Any of you "Arks" feel like paddling with us over Easter weekend?

I am sure you will get a lot of these, but the Cossatot is rain dependent, so I wouldn't bank on it having water (although there is a good chance it will around then). If I am around, then I would be happy to go down there and hang out.

I ran it a couple times with Dennis from Houston last season so he may remember the lines, and Bruce, Gary S., or Leon G. from Houston would have no problem getting people down it.

Like I said though...would be happy to show some fellow Texans down granted I am around and there is water.

Hey donna, if the Tot runs, I'm betting you won't have much trouble finding competent boaters to meet up with. I hope to be there if it goes as well, and even though most of the lines are pretty straight forward would be happy to boat with you guys for support/and or entertainment purposes. =) ( side note: entertainment being a poor choice of line on my part, thus getting shellacked uponst the rocks).

Hope to see you on the river,
Joe

Thanks for the head's up on help with the Tot. Yes, I know it's in the West - sorry about the east reference.
Joe and Matt, could you send me your email addresses....or how do I get them to correspond with you before Easter?
Also, I'm not able to make the trip myself as I'll be in California, but Christy Long who said she'd coordinate the Houston group has only done the Tot once - last year at Easter and wants to go again, so I'll send the info to her.
I LOVE the TOT, but haven't done it in 5 - 6 years.
We used to join a group of y'all over MOther's Day - lead by Felton??? Does he still hang with y'all?

Hey donna, my email is JTarver295@yahoo.com

Just make sure I know it's in regards to a paddling trip, or I'll think it spam.
As far as the Mothers day trips, the Cossatot First timers trip is always a fun time, whether the water is up or not. I went down the Tot my first time during one, and loved it.
That Felton character would be Walter Felton.
I can't say we really claim him, but he does tend to keep showing up here and there. Usually I think he is joined at the hip with Marcell. Those scallawags tend to stick together I guess. Like bacteria.

Yea, chances are he might be willing to hang out with the cool kids if you bribe him. Cheap beer is a sure thing. Ask him to paint his toenails for ya. :poke:

Hope we have some H2O for your trip, and keep us posted. :D
peace,
Joe

Thanks, Joe!
You'll be getting an email at your address from Christy Long.

Hope Walter reads this chat stuff and decided to "hang" with HCC for that weekend.
Since it's a three day weekend, maybe you can suggest some other close rivers and help HCC river rats out...
We LOVE Arkansas water....especially since Texas is dry, dry, dry.

Just got off the Rio Grande up at Big Bend. Paddleable, but very low.

Hey Donna,

I've run the Tot quite a few times and have helped some first timers get through it before. I'd love to meet and paddle with you guys if it's running. With it being the closest river to home (Shreveport), I'm usually there if it runs. My e-mail is ryanviser@gmail.com. Shoot me an e-mail as the weekend gets closer and if there's water we can definitely do it. I think from everyone else that's volunteered to help it would be a great crew that knows the lines and can set safety as well. Toodles!

Easter weekend on the Cossatot

Hey Matt,

Dennis might be on this trip and last year he mentioned paddling with several boaters from your area. Its a small paddling world. I am coordinating the trip and like knowing that we could end up paddling with locals. I will drop a line as it gets closer to Easter.

Christy,

I wouldn't consider myself a local by any means...I am actually from San Marcos, but just moved up to Fayetteville. I have paddled the Cossatot many of times and would be happy to run 'er with ya'll if I am around.

I will PM you me email and phone number.

Well, Easter weekend is coming up and several (3 or 4) of us here in Houston are watching the Wickes, Arkansas weather and Cossatot guages with plans to high-tail it to Arkansas if the conditions are favorable. We hope to paddle three days. Maybe the upper Cossatot, the Cossatot Falls, and the Little Missouri.

Do the conditions look right to you folks in that area?

Looks like there should be some rain on Thursday night, and here is a 7am to 1pm Easter Sunday GFS precipitation forecast:

Just gotta wait and see.
