Anybody know how to gauge the level of the Salado Creek near Batesville based on the visible stones in the old bridge pier in the middle of the creek near the rest stop on highway 167? Tom Kennon in "Arkansas Whitewater Rivers" states "eleven rows of stones visible is a good level- twelve rows of stones are too low."
I was down there earlier today and there are only 11 rows of stones to the base of the pier, unless you count the single stone perched at the very top of the pier. Maybe some of the upper part of the pier has been knocked off since this book was copywrighted in 1978?
If anyone has experience of the Salado and can clarify this I would appreciate it!

Re: Salado level
My info was updated in 04 it says nine stones are a min. if ten stones are vis. do not put in, way to low. also you must get prem. to put in at camp Tahkodah.
Re: Salado level
Don't count the partial layer on top. Use to be 9 stones was minimum level. Then I think a few hardy souls ran at lower levels. Tom Kaylor, formerly of Memphis and a frequent Salado visitor, put this info on the AW page.

Been down it at 7 and it was very pushy and some sections were in the trees. Not recommended for someone w/o appropiate skill level.
Never park inside the fenced area (there's a spot for a few cars right outside the gate and please do no block). Even if there is no one at the camp, I always leave $5 for accessing the property (can be done by sticking it in the door with a note).
