OT - Mountain Lions around Cossatot??

Post by Ryan Viser » Fri Feb 27, 2009 5:56 pm

Ok, so one night my wife, our dog, and I were camping at the Falls campground, nobody else was around which made this a bit more scary. Around 2 AM or so, we awoke to a rustling noise in the woods, so we perked up a little bit. Whatever it was came right next to the tent, and I don't know how to explain it but I could sense that it was big. You guys know how the tent pads there are made up of tiny pieces of gravel, and I could tell by the way I heard the ground move underneath it. I also could just sense its size, I'm pretty sure it was literally inches from my head. At any rate, we had left a coke can out on the table, and a few moments later we heard something playing with it. It sounded like it was being moved around a little bit at first, then it just outright crunched, as if something big had come down on it. For a long time, I thought maybe it could have been a black bear, which really wouldn't bother me because I know they're pretty timid, but the other day my wife was telling someone about the Falls and how all us boaters love to paddle it, and this person told her they were there once and saw an actual mountain lion on one of the rocks out there. What do you guys think?

Yeah right!!
Everyone knows mt lions go more for Dr Pepper. :poke:

Lots of open country over there. I have read these guys can travel even 100 miles or so looking for stomping ground. Wouldn't a sweet soda can and a bear make more sense? Of course...I wasn't listening to it in the middle of the night.
You sure this is on the right channel?

Ryan,
My place on the Ouachita has SEVERAL Mtn Lions and we have heard cubs at night. One time my mothers dogs were in heat and black panther was trying to get in the dog door. Another time we had some young kids that came knocking on the door at like three in the morning. They said they were camping in the cave that is just up stream from my place and a big black cat came in the cave and tried to get there puppy. Over in the Cossatot area there is a guy that feeds the bears and panthers!!!! We ride a bunch at wolf pen gap in Mena, we got there late on night and didnt feel like setting the tent up so me and my buds just through the sleeping pads on the trailer and crashed. I woke up to a cub stiffing my pad around my feet. A 20oz eastwing done the trick, hit the(little sucker wright between the eyes JUST KIDDING) metal railing on the trailer and that little sucker was gone. Dont let S. shreveport fool ya either. When i was building oil feild locations i had a Mtn Lion run down the road in front of my truck between mansfeild and shrevport. I know these big cats are everywhere because i have seen them!!!! We also have some BIG and i mean BIG snakes around caddo lake. I tried to catch one with my truck one time, didnt work very well because it slid my truck sidways and went off in the grass. It was longer then the road was wide!!! Double lane road no shoulders. We figured someones Anaconda had got out. Also had a alligator pick the back of my kayak out of the water and push me about ten feet on Cypress. Needless to say i paddle like hell back to the bank and everyone got a huge laugh.

Hahahaha, fire devil. But in all seriousness, that's pretty scary. I do remember being out near Sparkman, AR once. Sparkman is already kinda out in the sticks, and we were way out in the sticks of Sparkman. My buddy's family had a cabin out there and we were out exploring a good several miles away and heard some sort of cat scream. Sounded like about 1,000 women screaming bloody murder at once. Made the hair on the back of neck stand straight up! Back to the Falls incident, I wonder if it was a cat if it smelled my dog and was thinking about attacking. Either way, it sounds like from now on I'm either camping w. folks other than my wife at the Falls or camping alone, she read Adam's response and doesn't want anything to do with it now

I'm pretty sure it was a Chupacabra. I hear tell they have a good population around those areas.
Scary lil monkeys, yep.

As far as Mountain kittens, haven't you guys read the article by the AGFC recently regarding them. Their official report is there are no mountain lions in arkansas.
So there, it must've been a Chupacabra.

Heres what they look like if you happen across one, so you'll know it. Yea, I saved your lives. It's ok, don't mention it. Really.

No he lives in my back yard

there are mt lions around that area, as well as bears. There was an attack at shaddy lake a few years back, by a black bear. I think it was rabid, not sure though.

I remember camping at the falls and wakeing up to flock of turkeys coming through the campground, had to be 20 or so of them.

The Truth Is Out There.

The AG&FC just has to acknowledge it.

How come they don't admit that they are around these parts? Just curious.

Good ? my man. maybe it would mean xtra money to protect/manage them?who knows,Im tellin you guys its actually the ORANGAWOLFPUS anyway. Ask Will E.,Bryan P. and Kyle B. about him. He is 1/3 of each: orangatan/wolf/platypus and has a fierce howl! We were backpacking in the lower gorge of Dry creek and I began a late night howl off w/ him. He got pissed and kept creepin up the ridge closer to us. I kept on howlin louder and so did he. Finally Kyle got scared :chicken: and pissed off :x at me for provokin the beast. He made me shut up,but the orangawolfapus gave a few more yells just to get the last word. What a punk! He also got the last word the next day. As we hiked up into the upper gorge we found 10-15 mature oaktrees cut down right across the creek. Even one across landbridge and another strategically placed across the lip of the 30 footer, reacharound falls!Again what a punk he is. :xOkay, so maybe ORANGAWOLFAPUS cant operate a chainsaw. The good ole forest service did all of the damage in Dry (and maybe a lot more in other creeks too),however the ORANGAWOLFAPUS definitely exists and definitely scared the crap out of us w/ some bloodcurdling howls! Cmon fellas back me up on this.BP? Will?Kyle?Anybody?Anyways, if the forest service is stupid enough to try and create fish habitat in a ridiculously steep creek by cutting huge old hardwoods outta the streambed and across slides and waterfalls, then i would say the current stance on mountain lions and the ole ORANGAWOLFAPUS could be off base as well.Just my 2 cents
