Richland Thursday

Post by canoe » Thu Feb 12, 2009 6:32 pm

Great day on the river with relatively warm temps, a couple of sweet boofs, medium level(3.55 at takeout at 2pm). Although there will be wood problems the next time the creek flushes, and definitely there would be problems for a raft right now. Met the Forest service guy in charge out of Dover driving the shuttle road, and he seemed appreciative of the work everyone did cleaning out the road, although he was curious if we had cleared the work with the FS 1st. Told him that they were aware of what we were doing, and didn't have any objections. Dale

Hey Dale, sorry I didn't make it. I didn't get out of town until 3 am. When I got to Hope I realized I probably wasn't going to make it due to drowsiness kicking in. I changed course and drove to Ed Banks, and hung a sign on my car that said "Wake me up to paddle!!". We'll definitely plan on doing it soon when I don't have to wait until the last minute.

Too bad you missed it, it was a good day on the creek.

Hey Dale, is there anyone we should report that gauge to? Acorrding to the online graph it looks like it was reading about 3.1 around 2 o'clock and the picture I made of the gauge shows it half way between 3.5 and 3.6.

USGS, but don't know how much response you will get. Dale

I notified the USGS yesterday and Jaysson said they appreciated the heads up and would check into the problem soon. They do have a bit more than usual on their plate right now (as a lot of folks do), so we should try to be patient.

I wasn't worried so much with a quick response as just letting them know about it. Of course we like the gauges for our own use and would like them to be accurate, but I'm pretty sure they use that data for something too.

Thanks for calling them Fish.

Hey Fish -if you didn't already, then make sure your USGS contact knows about the Falling water landslide, and that even the approach from the North now takes longer due to road conditions.

Thanks Cowper - I informed him.

Jaysson also sent me this link: http://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2008/3103/pdf/FactSheet.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Interesting stuff about last spring's big floods. Worth a gander.

Yep, interesting. Surprised to see some peaks higher than the Dec 1982 flood - "The Big One." (Do I sound like an old war vet when I say that?) :) Somewhere I have a list of the levels I wrote down off the old Corps of Engineers recording that weekend. Gotta find that...or maybe it's in one of those brittle old ACC Newsletters?
