Hey there,

Just wondering when the next UALR pool session is? I just moved home from NWA and need to meet all the central Arkansas paddlers!
Also I was a student at ualr, what do I need to do/pay to come play!

Thanks!

Well unless squelched by the swim meets...the next pool session will be this coming wednesday from 6-8 pm, and saturdays ( again unless swim meets interfere ) from 2-5 pm. You basically just need to show up when someone that can help you will be there..or just show up to meet the paddlers that are able to make it that week...and bring your boat and skirt and paddle ( if you have them ) and if not, ask beforehand to borrow some gear, and usually someone can bring extra stuff.
It also helps to post your height, weight , and shoe size to help them with a proper fit.

If you do bring your boat, be sure to wash it out at the east side of the pool outside the doors. You should see a hose drug outside the doors for just this reason.

Hope this helps, if you have any other questions, feel free to PM me. I'll do what I can.

Joe,
What can be done or said to see if they would leave the gate open for the Canoe Club on those nights/day(Saturday) like they do for others so we can get into the inside parking area and not park so far away to carry boats in?

As of today, 2/8, the next session is 6 PM to 8 PM Wed Feb 11.

If you are a current UALR student, just come.

If not, then you should be a current dues-paying member of the ACC. We may or may not check this, but it would be significantly bad river karma to break the UALR rules; we could lose access for EVERYBODY to the pool. Please don't put us in this position!

Bring your stuff; come to the west side of the building, be sure to rinse off your boat before you come in. If you're there after 6 PM, the door will already be propped open. No matter how clean you think your boat is, even if you just washed it in the tub at home, rinse it anyway; the lifeguards are watching for this and we want UALR to remain happy with us.

Quit at about 7:40 to 7:45; we are supposed to be "out the door" at 8, not just then getting out of the pool.

We always go somewhere to eat afterwards; that's a good time for the "meet and greet" discussions. However, there are many great boaters who don't grace our pool sessions, so you should also try to drop by a Central Chapter meeting too. From your past posts, I think you've been paddling longer than a number of the pool session attendees (with exceptions, of course), so the Chapter meetings and mining the message board for upcoming trips are your best bets for finding folks headed out to the more challenging streams from Central Arkansas.

I've been a member of the acc off and on for some years now.Usually renew at vous but didn't make it this year.I had no idea you HAD to be a member to use the pool.Heck,I've even attended central meetings without being payed up.So can someone explain why you have to be?Insurance or the your my buddy so your buddy can kind of thing?I'm not breaking anyones balls unless we're being strong-armed into joining just to get our roll on.And that would be where the bad river karma plays in. Jodie B

Hey Jodie -

You don't have to be a member to go to the chapter meetings. But I think the agreement between UALR and the ACC is that only ACC members (those who pay the dues) & UALR students are allowed to use the pool. Like Cowper said, they may or may not check, but it would be a shame if we lost access (especially since it is free to us) because a lot of folks showed up who weren't members. If you look around at all the other pool sessions in other parts of the state, some of those require a fee. We don't have to pay anything at UALR - so paying for a membership is a small donation. I'm not trying to rag on anyone who is not a member, but for the sake of those who use the pool on a regular basis, it would just be nice for everyone to follow the rules. :D

This may be a silly question, but what is my proof of ACC membership?

Karla all the gates on all lots are open all weekend. Their is no chance of gates being opened on Wednesday for our little affair. I know it's inconvenient at times as evening classes are taking place and lots of folks are searching for parking.
The only consolation is that the parking meters do not have to be feed after Six p.m.
A surprising number of students here do not yet realize that after four p.m. any student or employee I.D. will open any gate. This leads the uninformed people to rely on what few metered parking places their are to park. And their feeding the meters also, even after six. Isn't that a blast to the schools coffers.
Now why they don't just open all the gates after four, nobody will ever know why for sure. Meter money's from four to six maybe? Probably nets them an extra hundred plus bucks a day!

The lot west of the pool was open Wednesday, gate was up. I asked an officer if I could park, he said as long as the gate is up, it's open to all. Maybe just luck on my part.

Actually..not all the gates will open after 4. The gate blocking off the old access road will not open unless congress all shows up to the pool in a minivan and says so. Most of the rest of them however, yes.

Karla, I feel your pain about the Lot #2 access gate being closed. This has been an ongoing pain in the arse for a number of years now. It is officer discretion as to whether or not they will open the gate. Some do, some...not so much.
I know it is a hike, and it sucks. But think of it this way, it's a wonderful warm up prior to getting in the pool. ALmost like a hike through the woods to get to the put in.
For more realism...you could always go to the far east side of lot 2 and hike alongside the creek up to the parking deck bridge....please stay out of the flowerbeds from there though. I would hate to have to set booby traps.

Aside from that, if I am able to go to the pool that night..which is rare...then I usually let whoever is behind me in. I charge chester a quarter per entry, but you I'll let in.

Alas, Joe takes advantage of my painful bad back every chance he gets. But I give him the dirtiest quarters I can find.

1) Yep, that is my understanding of "the rules". UNLESS you have access as a UALR student/faculty/employee...

2) Different deal. At Central Chapter meetings, ACC makes the rules, and our rules say, EVERYONE IS WELCOME AT OUR OYSTER BAR MEETINGS! At the UALR pool, UALR owns the pool and makes the rules, and they said they want folks who use their pool to meet the above rule.

3) I honestly don't know if we are insured via ACC/ACA for these sessions or not - all I know is that is the way UALR asked us to do it. I suspect that their insurance covers our "organization", but can not cover allowing unrestricted public access. In the end, it really doesn't matter - they own the pool, I love getting to use it, and to protect that I'm more than willing to follow their rules. This is not the ACC trying to "strong arm" you into joining; it is just us trying to protect our own continued access to this great facility by doing it by UALR's rules.

P.S. - I have to add, even with the "required" ACC membership, the Little Rock pool sessions retain the lead as the LEAST EXPENSIVE indoor pool sessions anywhere around the state, if you come to even a small fraction of the available sessions!

Joe, I'd be glad to pay the quarter  Still hate that far hike. I am not as agile carrying that boat as you guys. :poke:
