Road Access Summary Reports

Post by Cowper » Sat Jan 31, 2009 8:02 am

Hey, I see we're getting multiple threads, all on the same question, "can I get to river XYZ?" I thought it might be helpful if we all tried to collect these reports in one thread, instead of having to search multiple pages.

Soooooo, if you have reliable information on access points, please add it here! Include place, date, and known conditions...

Richland Creek - As of 1/30, Road was opened north of Ben Hur to the put in, and about 1 mile beyond that. Crews going back for further scouting and clearing on 1/31. Road continuing on to Campground is almost certainly NOT open yet, but we believe Forest Service will be clearing the stretch along the top of the ridge, allowing us to concentrate on opening up the road down to the campground, which is NOT a FS priority because nobody lives there (so not a Civil emergency like others stranded by this storm) and campground is a closed facility anyway.

On saturday, a good contingent of volunteers managed to cut their way from the Put-in up the hill making the connection to the road from Lurton. The Forest Service opened the road from there to Dickey Junction. Our determined crew then worked until dark and made it about a mile from Dickey Junction down toward the campground; some think we can make it the rest of the way to the campground Sunday morning. We'll get in a low water run if there's still time.

So far no significant injuries; but keep your fingers crossed for us. Some of these ice-laden trees literally exploded as we cut into them; many were "spring-loaded" and would move significantly as the cuts were made. Photos and war stories to follow in a few days...

wish i could've been there to help too. I'm glad all you addicts...errrr...i mean enthusiasts are on the ball with this.

we know the roads are screwed, but is there anyone with any creek reports. it doesn't sound like anyone has gotten to paddle anyway, but i've got to think the streams are probably devestated as well. we may be cleaning all spring instead of paddling :(

Pam/Dale -
The way we see it, you DID participate in this effort!
Your cabins provided "base camps" for 2/3 of those who helped more than one day; your chainsaw was worked to the bone; your four-wheeler resupplied chainsaws with gas and bar oil on Sunday.

Besides that, most of us also see it as a way to repay some small portion of the free medical care we and/or family members have received over the years when there was no ER room available; how many war stories could we tell on this comment alone? And how many bowls of warm soup; how many cold beers, how many shuttles driven?

No, we're still "in the red" on this one; you guys are way ahead! :beer:

ditto on that one Cowp.

Dale and Pam also didn't hesitate to offer all their supplies, four wheelers, etc when Jim had his mis-adventure a while back. While they had already let a crew of boaters crash and the the Richland super-pad!

Thanks Dale and Pam. Sharing your place on Richland is going way beyond what's necessary and extremely generous.

btw, I'm in this weekend folks, let's chop some Wood!!

just be careful with those chainsaws or end up like this guy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gn8EQ0azXpQ" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
