Paddle For The Planet (April 26)

Hey everyone,

There has been some talk about this on another thread, but I figured it was time to give you the low down on what's going on with this Paddle for the Planet thing. I'm planning on a short presentation at the Central Chapter meeing this month and hopefully at the River Valley Chapter meeting as well.

The spirit behind this event is the addage of the environmental movement to "Think Globally and Act Locally" On April 26, 2009 at Entergy Park in Hot Springs, AR we are hoping to assemble over 350 canoes and kayaks for about a 5 mile paddle on Lake Hamilton to raise awareness for a variety of Environmental Issues in Arkansas. Why 350? 350 parts per million of Carbon Dioxide is the safe upper limit determined by climatologists to prevent widespread Global Climate Change. Thats the thinking globally part. What issues will we be paddling for? Each participant gets to decide and a list will be compiled to send to the appropriate state legislature. This is acting locally.

The event also will serve as a fund raiser for the ACC Conservation Fund, another "acting local" componet.

Not sure if paddle for the planet would be the right venue for a blowlog, but if you want one, I'll contact Carbonfund.org and they can make sure the carbon released is offset in some way. Instead, we'll probably just go ahead and say..no blowlogs at paddle for the planet.

Good call on no glass near water Dennis. Richard as far as adult beverages go, what people do after the event is up to them. Its a family friendly event, so in short, no...adult beverages will not be provided. Plus, since this is also going to raise money for the Conservation Fund, the more frills the event offers, the less money makes it into the Fund. just a simple 5 mile paddle...about 2.5 out and 2.5 back in. We're paddling in a high traffic/exposure area purposefully, to be seen. The aerial photo-op will be amazing!

I'll paddle it in a whitewater boat...
