Sunday 1/11 Blackwater?

Post by Lupe » Sat Jan 10, 2009 12:00 pm

Anyone want to do a blackwater paddle on Sunday? I'm flexible...could do Wattensaw Bayou, Bayou de View, Cache....or could also be talked into just puttering down the Little Maumelle at Pinnacle.

Weather looks to be cool but sunny...I think it should be a nice day in da swamp...

Cheers,

How about we start on Bayou DeView at Apple Lake, and go down to N34.81071 W91.29755? I found some old scouting notes that say there is a public access there; it could be as little as 2.3 miles downstream from Hwy 70, or in swamp miles, could be 4 miles with portages (although unlikely at this level). To keep the trip from ending too quickly, we'll have to either do side-channel exploration into Robe Bayou to the West, or have to launch at Eden Road about 1.5 miles upstream.

Sure that looks good and if we can't find a take out to leave a car, we can just do something else right in that area.

Pick a time to meet...preferably not too early...

How about 9:00, Exit 193, T-Ricks?

Right now it looks like it may be a minimal group, so I'm assuming we both need to bring cars from LR; but if someone wants to pool from Conway, a meeting at ~7:30 to 7:45 would work...

Clif, you could become a Seventh Day Adventist; and then, there's always Wednesday night. Besides, I don't think you're keeping good count - New Year's Day was a Thursday; we just go every day we can!

Uh, 9:00 does not qualify as "preferably not too early."

Since I was actually thinking 11, how about we split the difference and say 10am?

Purty please?

OK, I'll still need to try to get there by 9, which should put us on track for an actual meeting at 10.

Ended up with just the two of us - Water level was 13.9 feet at Morton, but had been higher for several days, so the section we were on was just now beginning to drop. The "straight line" distance for this trip was only about 2.3 miles, but we actually travelled 5.4 miles due to the number of times we checked out side channels trying to get a better feel for the area. We encountered less wildlife than on some of these trips, but did see a good representative sample of birds. The trees seemed less dense than some other "Big Woods" areas, but many of the cypress trees were older and larger than average, so overall this was an extremely scenic area. Bottom line, this is a good short float for those wanting to see some classic big cypress trees on Bayou DeView.

Footnote: Do not attempt to float Big Robe Bayou down to Bayou DeView - it does not appear to do what the maps say it does. The old channel connecting to DeView is stagnant and not readily passable; I suspect that Big Robe has diverted and now dumps into the Cache.
