Buffalo River - Dec 19-21??
Buffalo River - Dec 19-21??
River is low. Temps are low. We have another chance of rain before Dec 19-21. We will have to see what the rain does then. If things become more favorable as we approach Dec 19-21 we may schedule an overniter. Otherwise we will be looking at the following weekend (Dec 26-28) etc etc until it happens.
By now you know the drill. Arriving Friday night is optional. We shuttle Saturday morning and do most of the paddling on Saturday. We try to be off the river and headed home by noon on Sunday. Sitting around a campfire Friday and Saturday nights and enjoying each others company has become a tradition.
As always, weather and water will be the dominant factors in determining if and where we will float. Updates will be posted on this first posting of the thread.
Questions and suggestions are welcome. You may post them here or email Richard at rmmcfadden@yahoo.com
Some things you need to know. We have never had a problem but just so everyone knows on the front end:
1. For liability purposes this is not an ACC/Ozark Society sponsored activity. You and only you are responsible for your own actions.
2. This is a family friendly float. Children are welcome.
3. Alcohol is not forbidden but drunkeness and abusive conduct is.
4. If you use "fowl" language or need to smoke, please do so away from the group.
5. Treat others as you would have them treat you. Maybe even nicer.
On the floats so far, we have been impressed with how well everyone has adhered to #5. That is one reason we keep going back.
If you have never been, we look forward to meeting you on the river.
FOOD:
Because of the various arrival and departure times of participants the simplest approach to meals is for each person to be responsible for his/her own. That does not preclude participants from getting together and pooling efforts. It also does not preclude pot lucks. So if you want to get with others to plan meals thats good. If we decide to pot luck a meal or two that is fine as well. But the responsibility lies first with the individual.
Breakfasts and Suppers will be at camp. Lunches will be on the river.
This has worked well so far and creates the least hassle. And we can gather around the campfire after dinner. Campfires have been great.
If need be, we will have a kitchen tent set up with tables for food preparation.
GEAR:
Each person is responsible for providing their own gear appropriate for the weather and water conditions. If you are just getting into canoe/kayak camping and are lacking some items please let us know. So far no one has been turned away because of lack of gear.

Re: Buffalo River - December ??
Now that my ankle has healed to the point I can get a boot on, well kind of. When I couldn't go on the trip in November I went and bought a new toilet and BIG O'l tent to make me feel better, and it did!!! I hope it rains so we can make a run. If it does not rain I'll probably camp at Steel Creek or Kyles at least Saturday night.

Man, now that I know your going Raftdog it makes me mad that I probably can't go this month. I will make you go next time I can go. Although, there is a chance I can go the weekend of the 20th and 21st.

Re: Buffalo River - Dec 19-21??
it's my poor wife, she took a couple spills ,and i need to make sure things on the home front are good before i can make an overnighter... ..it wouldn't look too good on the police report that her caregiver was out hoopin' it up on a canoe camp-out.
Re: Buffalo River - Dec 19-21??
PB, any amount of time you can be with us is a plus for the rest of us. Having said that. Family comes first. I hope your wife is doing better.
The outlook for Dec 19-21 looks promising. We have rain chances extending through most of the week. Only time will tell. As always, we will move upstream as water levels allow.

Gretchen, I did not receive the PM.
My son totalled his car on the ice last night so we are going to be vehicle shopping this weekend. Consequently I will not be able to go. That does not mean the rest of you can't.

Richard, which son -- Mark? Which ever, hope he wasn't injured.

Re: Buffalo River - Dec 19-21??
Richard, I do hope that your son is okay
Re: Buffalo River - Dec 19-21??
Mark is OK. He was coming home from work in Little Rock Monday night on icy I-40. A truck slid and Mark overcorrected and hit a guardrail sideways. Totalled the car but he was not injured.
So I went to ebay to see what was available. Found and bought a 2006 Subaru Forester. And what is ironic. Its original owner lives in Clinton. We are going to Memphis to pick it up.
