I concur: good read!! Four plus stars.

Everyone should have the opportunity to take a trip like this -- someplace where language, customs, and beliefs are unfamiliar and things we take for granted -- transportation and sustenance -- become everday hurdles to overcome. Quickly you discover it's not so much about the river as it is about the people. And that's why I liked this book so much -- the story is revealed through the people -- the river just serves as the backdrop.

Off River Tangent:

Just finished reading Geronimo: The Man, His Time, His Place by Angie Debo as part of my studies looking at the life of Chief Altaha Benito Grayhorse of Hot Springs who fought alongside Geronimo in the late 1800s. A great book looking at the Apaches -- their culture, the Apache Wars and their ultimate demise. A very noble people. Very smart people -- there is no mystery as to why Apache scouts were heavily favored by the U.S. Calvary. Another four plus stars.

Down the River by Edward Abbey...This is a great collection of his essays, all pertaining to the one thing we all love...Rivers

Hell or High Water: Surviving Tibets Tsangpo river. Really good book. By Peter Heller

The Last River: The search for Shangri-La. Documents an attempted first descent down the Tsangpo in Tibet by a group of kaykers. Epic portages and immense scale. There is a video, too.
