I spotted it in North Florida this weekend. My camera only has 3x zoom, so as you can tell, I was able to get pretty dang close to it.

I don't know my birds as well as I should but is that a red tailed hawk? Am I way off base?

I was thinking it might be a red shouldered hawk, because of the striped tail.

I'm no expert, but do count myself as an amature bird watcher. I've compared your pictures with the hawk pictures in my book, Birds of Eastern and Central North America, by Roger Tory Peterson. It certainly looks to be a red-shouldered hawk. They can be found in Florida year-round.

I would second Marlo's I.D., however, except for the shoulder and back, most of the I.D. markers are on the shadow side of the bird and impossible to make out.
