Avatars Made Easy

Post by kfarm » Sun Nov 02, 2008 1:22 pm

Well after answering the question of how do I take my image and make an avatar way to many times, I finally spent a little time and a couple of dollars and created a website to take all the hassle out of creating an avatar from an image.

Right now it is in the draft/beta type release, but I would like it if you guys/girls gave it a try and provide me with some feedback of what you like and don't like.

Click on the following link to give it a try.

AvatarDr.com

Thanks for you support

Thank you from a computer dummy like me. I've wanted the one I made for a while and have others I will make as soon as I can digitize some OLD photos.

The one I made was from a picture Susan took on our Buffalo Canoe float last October where I picked up a little firewood for our campout at Brice gravel bar.

Thank you.

Ad? Moderator(s)?

Please - Let's think this one over a tad first.

He wasn't selling anything per se in his post, he was giving us something for FREE in exchange for possibly a little feedback, and I saw this as a public service to our members. In that he wants to market a product down the road, yes, it might be considered as an advertisement, but not that he will make any significant money off of our limited market. And I liked how easy it was for a computer dummy like me to finally get an avatar. 5 minutes and I am slow.

I've tried maybe a dozen times and several hours in the past to make an avatar and have asked about a dozen ACC folks how to get a photo reduced enough to fit in an avatar to no avail. Guess I never asked the right folks. Probably should have asked Richard McFadden as he seems to have no problem changing his avatar at will. Seem to remember having asked Fish at a chapter meeting how to when I first came over here a few years ago, and he said he would get back to me on that, but he didn't have time to answer me right then. NO problem - he really was in a hurry that night and he usually is. I know Bill is VERY talented in that area as well as several others, but I never asked him for advise again as I knew how busy he always is. I wish I could take lessons from Bill to learn how to do much of what he can do with computers as he is a wiz, but that isn't going to happen most likely. I had also asked some other folks at a couple of board meetings and never got an answer, so maybe there are others in the ACC who will want to use this freebie as well.

Again - MY THANKS to "kfarm" for providing this service. Feel free to ask me for a shuttle or a hot water shower (if the Zodi works) if we meet up on the river someday. I'd give those for free to anyone in ACC, but I'd really like to give you one now as you helped me and probably others. You might also save our moderators precious time in having to answer multiple questions from dummies like me about avatars.

If a moderator has to intervene, maybe "they" could just move it to the for sale/trade section for others to see and use if they want to call it call it an "AD".

my thoughts and not those of anyone special - Eric Esche

Sorry about that, Eric. Just calling a spam a spam. Unsolicited posts with the intent to get people to use a website are not all bad, but it is against the "rules" on most message boards like ours. I'll give you that this one is at least related to message boards in general and that this guy is a least not selling used auto insurance, but this was no doubt posted to lots of message boards just to drive traffic to the site (the total market is far bigger than our little group indeed). And "he" is just trying to look like a member here (joined earlier that day, so welcome to paddling buddy!). "He"s not going to meet you on the river or take any showers, because the odds that he's a paddler are slim to none. It's selling ad space and their program to use on other websites - free feedback would be a small bonus at best (and they likely won't bother to read it here anyway). It may be spam you have a taste for, but it is very much still spam.

Anyway, if you're happy with it, I guess I am too. I will draw the line at sites that sell nose hair trimmers, no matter how many times it keeps getting caught in my helmet straps! 8)

A quick google search will turn up hundreds of sites just like this. Not hard to find if you need one.

Additionally, any web hosting site like 'webshots' will let you link to a ~100pixel version straight into the ACC forum.
Also, iphoto, picasa, or similar photo software will also let you choose what size to export the files.

And if you don't want to give 'the man' your site visits add 'site:org' to your google search and you'll get a bunch of open source options.

Thanks, Bill and Zach. Guess it is spam no matter how you cut it and he probably isn't a paddler. Forgot to look at the color of the name, (I've been told that I am color blind at times even though my color vision has been checked as near perfect or perfect many times when I matched colors for a living), but even that doesn't tell you reliably if the person doesn't jump through all of the hoops (see Richard's "legendary" status post.) Offer still stands if he is a paddler and just joined us. Yes, I'm an optimist at times. Hope and like to think I'm a realist when scouting rapids.

Maybe the club could add a FAQ section on how to make an avatar, but that would be more work for Scott or someone else. I know I'm not the only computer dummy out here. And BTW - I did try a websearch a few years ago when I first joined ACC and wanted to make an avatar. Maybe there are more websites telling you how now and I didn't realize it because I didn't look or search again. Anyhow, I'm glad I'm in the same club as y'all and I finally have an avatar. Thanks for the information. I'm slowly being dragged into this century. Now if I can just learn how to add names into my phone to go with all the numbers on those tiny little keys.........

But I bet AvatarDr at least loves the outdoors -- I noticed that those message boards where he has left his message -- and always the exact same message -- all have to deal with the great outdoors -- paddling, climbing, gardening, etc.

How do you know he's not on other boards that don't have to do with outdoors? Or are you (as I've sometimes suspected) a member of every web forum on earth? :)

for what it's worth Eric, your new avatar is as cool as somebody running Killer Fang Falls in an open boat.
