Little Maumelle River

Post by Gordon Kumpuris » Thu Oct 30, 2008 2:10 pm

I want to take my girls (10 and 14) on an out a short class I or flatwater canoe trip saturday. Out and back is an option. Thinking about Little Maumelle. Any suggested put ins or other options. Dragover seems too low as do other streams. The Ouachita below Remmel looks like it may be a go but I may only have my one vehicle. Thinking about maybe going to the Buffalo and doing Tyler Bend to Gilbert and paying for a shuttle. Any other thoughts?

Also thinking about Little Red or Big Creek near Little Red. ????? Never been to either stream. Little Red is dam released but what about take out and shuttle options? Big creek I'm guessing is too low and shuttle might be non existent.

Big Creek unlikely. Red too civilized -- even more so than Little Maumelle -- except for short stretch below dam and swinging bridge. Little Maumelle easy access, pretty and nice colors and wildlife. Saline -- always better than anticipated, close and don't forget we now have an outfitter that'll help with shuttle. And have to throw a plug in for the Cadron (Highway 124 to Mill Creek bridge) -- I can run shuttle anytime after noon. :)

Gordon, if you want to do the Little Red with them later on, give me a call and Kim or I would be able to help out with a shuttle if you come this way. Might even paddle with you depending on the schedules! Dripping Shoals to Ramsey is about seven miles or so and the put-in is about 5 miles from our house.

On most of the sections, there are not a lot of sand bars, gravel bars (a few when they are putting up low flow numbers). Any trip will take a little longer at those levels. Releases vary in volume and times here lately.

Hey Gordon,

Looks like I'll be taking half of my kayaking class on the Remmel to Rockport stretch. So if you need shuttle with your girls, should have some available. We may get an earlier start than you want, but we'll probably be on the river or at Rockport through mid afternoon at least.
