surfin, deliverance style
Well noone had to squeal like a pig, but shots from the handcannon started shortly after we got there and each one sounded like it was getting closer. He must have fired at least 25 times while I was there. I wanted to talk to him but I think he may lack any real intelligence or sense of civility, like some people on this forum e.g. Bryan P, Team Stupid. JK dont get your boxers in a wad. Is it normal to hear gunfire like that while your down there? After about the 25th shot which sounded close, I started getting a little nervous and left early. It was pretty unfortunate though as there were a father and his kids and their friends there all having a really good time. We stayed away from the bank next to the hole and used the one further downstream with no private property signs next to it, and I even started staying river left all together, but the gunfire still rang out.

Have not been over there to surf for at least ten years.
The guy with the guns just took away the fun factor.
Last couple times I was there with a couple others, he came out with his pistol and shot a bunch of time into the water just upstream of where we were playing (we were staying away from his bank, for sure)
Then he came down to his bank with a casting rod and proceeded to throw a multi hooked lure right into the hole closest to his bank.
We just sat there and watched him and after maybe 30 minutes he left.
Jeez, if I was him, I would charge a couple bucks for parking and set up some coolers and sell soft drinks etc and make a few bucks off the deal. Thereby making some needed cash and making everybody happy.
My fear is one of these days he is gonna screw up and end up shooting some one or else one of the boaters is gonna take that pistol and jam it up his rear end or worse.
Sad to hear he has not mellowed out after all these years.

That's ridiculous. Is there nothing that can be done legally? He's lucky Walt Blackadar isn't around anymore. I hear he was pretty fond of carrying a guy in his boat. lol

Re: surfin, deliverance style
The first run-in we had with him he met us on the other side at the bridge on his tractor. He was quick to point out we were on his land on the bank(which we were). He asked if we picked up our trash and we showed him 3 bags of trash we collected. He found out we were from Tulsa and proceeded to tell us the story you have probably already heard elsewhere on the board about the people from Tulsa who cut down his wilow. We assured him we had nothing to do with that. After some friendly conversation(how many kids, where do you work, things of that nature)he has let us drive through his yard and park next to the bank. A 12-pack of Busch and a denouncement of Obama will get you a long way with Steve. He told us this past spring that he was going to have to fence his bank off because of insurance reasons due to lawsuit. He told us we could still float down and use his bank. I don't know how much of his story is accurate about his property rights versus our river rights, but I'm not going to push my luck with him. Once he saw we were respecting his land and respectful of him we've had no problems and he always comes down to chat & drink a beer. Good Luck.

Re: surfin, deliverance style
I never heard the story about some one from Tulsa cutting down Steve's tree. Seems like way back when there was a tree hanging over the hole on river right --- best of my knowledge water under cut the bank and washed it away. The loss of that tree was felt by every one who took pictures of the surf spot in that you could climb on the tree and get some pretty neat photos close up of a person surfing the hole. I wonder If that is the tree Steve is refering to. I know a lot of the Tulsa area boaters and would be real surprised that one of them would cut down a tree any where. Like I said, been at least ten years since I been over there. At one time tho, it was a very popular place to learn to surf.

Er, um --- remember - this is the South. A man lucky enough to live in the country can still shoot his gun on his own back forty if he wants to!

Dave, please refer to Info on Fisher's Ford a couple of pages back. Paddledog explains the willow story pretty much the exact way I heard it.
