Red River - SW Arkansas - Oct. 11 & 12

Post by Butch Crain » Wed Oct 08, 2008 8:51 am

A small group of Ozark Society members from N. Louisiana are doing a Red River overnight float this weekend -

"Red River
Sat morning going to meet at 7:00 at McDonnalds I 220 in Bossier . Go up to Hwy 2 and drop shuttle then on up to Doddridge (Spring Bank Ferry) 18-20 miles back down to hwy 2 . This is the shortest overnighter we have done and have not repeaded it so thought it would be a good choice. Long range weather shows windy and poss of TS but wind will be at our back for a change "

all who are self sufficient are always welcome.

The sandbars are usually vast and the firewood plentiful.

Lots of wildlife usually - gators, pelicans, eagles, beaver, otter, deer, coyotes

Great low angle panoramas - http://community.webshots.com/user/butchcrain" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - see the 2 Red River folders

Hey, there's an empty seat in the front of my kayak. Plenty of room to stretch out that sore knee.

All you gotta do is let me know you're coming (and maybe bring along a loaf of Panera bread).

Good luck with the rehab otherwise. I'll see you on one of Richard's trips soon I hope.

Great float - 9 boats, 11 paddlers. Temps were great, firewood plentiful, maybe a few more mosquitos around camp than usual.

New to the group were Leigh Baker from Tyler & Tom (?) from Haughton, LA. Great having you both along - hope we'll see you again.

Thank you Butch for sharing the pictures. One of these days I hope to join yall.
If I can get two others to carpool with me and the Buffalo is not calling, I will be there.

Same here Richard. I won't be waiting on a car pool, but hopefully after November, I'll be up for one of those spark flying, 10 degree wind chill Buffalo campouts & floats.

Look forward to seeing all the familiar faces.

Noticed a fishing rod in one of the pictures.
How is/was the fishing on the Red trip?

Looks like fun. Albiet much different than the Caddo that I am so fond of.

Thanks for the pics

None of us did any serious fishing, but one of our boats visited with a local couple that caught 3 catfish (on rod and reel) that sounded like they must have gone 20-25 pounds each judging from the length our paddlers described.

We also saw a hoop net float going upstream at about a 4-5 mph clip. Nobody wanted to get shot or gator bit so we didn't mess with it.
