Buffalo River-Oct 10-12

Post by Richard » Fri Sep 26, 2008 2:44 pm

Updates will be posted here.
I am signing off the computer and will see yall at Buffalo Point tonight or Hwy 14 Access at 10am Saturday morning.
Cell Phone 501-450-0217. I don't have cell phone reception at Buffalo Point.

First Update:
WHERE: As things stand now, we will paddle Hwy 14 to Rush. We will camp at Buffalo Point Friday night. We will drop the boats and gear at the Hwy 14 access and be ready to run shuttles Saturday morning at 10am. We should be on the water between 11am and 12 noon. We will stop for lunch about 1pm. We will camp Saturday night at Bice Bend. Depending on how energetic we are we will be at Rush no later than Noon on Sunday.
REMINDER. Each person is responsible for their own well being. That includes paddling equipment, camping equipment, and food. If you are wanting to go and need help in any way, post here or contact us for assistance.
WEATHER Note. There is rain coming Monday night. If it raises the river substantially we may move upstream and do a different section.
WARNING. Weather is always an X factor. You need to be prepared for rain, cold as well as hot and dry.

By now you know the drill. Arriving Friday night is optional. We shuttle Saturday morning and do most of the paddling on Saturday. We try to be off the river and headed home by noon on Sunday. Sitting around a campfire Friday and Saturday nights and enjoying each others company has become a tradition.

This one is a few days before the full moon so the moon will be up before the sun goes down. We are still close to the equinox but days are getting shorter and nights longer.

As always, weather and water will be the dominant factors in determining if and where we will float. Updates will be posted on this first posting of the thread.

Questions and suggestions are welcome. You may post them here or email Richard at rmmcfadden@yahoo.com

Some things you need to know. We have never had a problem but just so everyone knows on the front end:
1. For liability purposes this is not an ACC/Ozark Society sponsored activity. You and only you are responsible for your own actions.
2. This is a family friendly float. Children are welcome.
3. Alcohol is not forbidden but drunkeness and abusive conduct is.
4. If you use "fowl" language or need to smoke, please do so away from the group.
5. Treat others as you would have them treat you. Maybe even nicer.

On the floats so far, we have been impressed with how well everyone has adhered to #5. That is one reason we keep going back.

If you have never been, we look forward to meeting you on the river.

FOOD:
Because of the various arrival and departure times of participants the simplest approach to meals is for each person to be responsible for his/her own. That does not preclude participants from getting together and pooling efforts. It also does not preclude pot lucks. So if you want to get with others to plan meals thats good. If we decide to pot luck a meal or two that is fine as well. But the responsibility lies first with the individual.

Breakfasts and Suppers will be at camp. Lunches will be on the river.

This has worked well so far and creates the least hassle. And we can gather around the campfire after dinner. Campfires have been great.

We will have a kitchen tent set up with tables for food preparation.

GEAR:
Each person is responsible for providing their own gear appropriate for the weather and water conditions. If you are just getting into canoe/kayak camping and are lacking some items please let us know. So far no one has been turned away because of lack of gear. [/color]

Of course you're welcome. Some of my best paddling buds are okies. I hope they are able to join us as well. Which brings up another topic. Uh . . . ugh . . . this soap box is getting hard to climb on. Carpooling is encouraged.

Count me in with my CANOE, and friend Laurie (Mary might be joining us also). Laurie is totally new to the camping/canoe tripping stuff..she stated: "I'm a virgin to camping"...............need to ask you'll for help in gearing her up!
We plan on being there Saturday morning to join you down the river to the Sat night campsite. Full moon expected, right?'

Butch will you be on this trip? Want to know cause you usually take the pics. If not I'll bring my camera. I am bringing the friendship rock and plan swim slant rock; if you are up for it please join me. Is Bob Stout, Dave Reid, Alan, and any of the others coming on this trip?

Needed items: sleeping bag (Eric noted he would bring), pad?, Eric- can susan lend Laurie some warm gear? Laurie is about a size 8or so.......anyway that would help.

Richard can we borrow a tent? Or Painter Bob? I think that should cover it. Laurie has hiking boots (no booties) - oh well. maybe by that weekend we'll have something for her feet?....
Plan on bringing salmon, shrimp, veggies, and munchies. Lots of drinking water and a toilet :D
HEY, Painter Bob, lets practice our knots for our swift water course; I'll be bringing rope.

Look forward to paddling/camping with you all again.

For your friend Laurie - I will bring an extra sleeping bag and pads. I also have a pair of wetsuit booties with hard soles she can wear and polypropylene socks to line them and will bring those.

I have extra warm clothes for dry land, head to toe, except the boots, which you say she has. They will be large, but large is better than too small. We will see what the weather does and look at the forecast when it gets closer, like next Thursday, to determine what she will need. I have some wetsuit gear that might fit her and rash guards if you want me to bring it, and I have some raingear that could be used over the polypropylene layers as splash wear. Let me know what you want me to bring for her.

It's nice of you to bring someone new into a sport and to expose them to a world outside of their normal environment. I know we will try to make her first impression a good one, just by doing what we always do and having fun.

Still have two seats available this weekend in the Suburban going over to the Buffalo if anyone wants to carpool over. The more the merrier, the cheaper per person, and fewer vehicles to shuttle

Just looked at the Weather forecast again and it is now saying mid 70's on Saturday and 80's on Sunday. Can you believe this is October? Yesterday, I was thinking I might get to break out the dry suit. Looks like we are going to have another great weekend. I'm bringing a fishing rod on this trip.

I know, Mary and I were seeing the same fish - lots of them. I was fishing with my hoe for things like tires and mine cart wheels.

The water probably won't be as clear this week with the rain, but it shouldn't be any lower either.

Looks like another great trip. Leaves may be starting to turn some too based on the maples up here in Rogers.
