Left Hand Control

Post by Regud » Wed Sep 24, 2008 8:46 pm

After getting suggestions from the forum, I bought a Dagger Approach 10 and now I need a new paddle. I am left handed, which I know does not determine paddle hand control. I have played with my adjustible touring paddle and 30 degree left hand to 0 degree feels the most comfortable. I am planning on learning to roll over the next few months. Any opinions on helping me select the right paddle will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Regud,

Glad you decided on the Approach, I think you'll really enjoy it! My recommendation for a paddle is the Werner Corryvrecken bent shaft paddle. They're not cheap but we have two of them and love the performance, strength, durability, and light weight. The Corryvrecken has Right and Left hand feather adjustments from 0-75 degrees in 15 degree increments. Like my other (fixed) paddles, I like a 30degree offset the best. These paddles, like your boat, handle recreational paddling beautifully as well as preforming more high-angled moves on the lower classes of WW. Price $330

Best Regards
Jim

Agreed...I use a Corryvrecken for flatwater too. I have the premium model with amber (yellow) blades for maximum visibility.

Be careful when making the "bent shaft" decision... I, for one, simply can't use a bent shaft because of an old wrist injury... but, I've heard others indicate that what seems like a good idea may have draw-backs when in actual use... Try BOTH out. Btw, my bride uses a straight shaft model of that same paddle & when I paid for the fiberglass shaft at REI they sent the carbon-fiber version... It also comes in a small-shaft version that women and men with smaller hands can use & it relieves some hand stresses from gripping the larger paddle-shaft...

I can neither refute or defend the merits of bent paddle shafts, so, like Crane, I would say try both. Also like Larry, I have had past wrist injuries, in my case, Tendinitis in both wrists from ten years of rolling industrial compressed gas cylinders. Fortunately neither paddle shaft design has given me any trouble in that regard.I have come to like my two-piece carbon fiber Corryvrecken most for its light weight, and power. Mine was given to me as a gift several years ago. Had I made the purchase, I think I would have picked one with a straight shaft because that's what I was used to. My initial concerns were about easily keeping the paddle oriented correctly when involved with the changing circumstances of a more complex rapid, or trying to re-orient my hands on the paddle while underwater and attempting to roll. To date, I have become very comfortable with the bent shaft in rapids but have never used it when rolling. Another thing I was Leary about is the notion of a two-piece paddle, one more thing to possibly screw up... In the case of the Corryvrecken, I really like their ferrule system, it seems to be very reliable and solid as well as offering the potential to be broken down and stored for use as a spare.

Best Regards
Jim

Thanks for all the suggestions. I did not realize the Werner touring paddles where so adjustable.

Has anyone had any experience with Seven2 paddles http://www.seven2.com/?
