CANOE CAMPING 101 FOLLOW UP

Post by Richard » Sat Sep 13, 2008 10:37 pm

This is one of the best sites for information on canoe camping. It includes a very well laid out gear list and a list of rivers.
http://members.aol.com/Mmcbs/index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There were several things we did not discuss: food, first aid, fishing. And that is only one letter of the alphabet. So if you have more questions here is the place to get them answered.

I was asked how I get all that STUFF in a canoe. A picture is worth a thousand words. I had a Lafuma recliner, a directors chair, two tables, a cot, 76x30x3" self inflating mattress, sleeping bag with sleeping stuff, Clothes bag, food bag, waterproof box (camera, binoculars, flashlight, etc), Possibles bag (first aid kit, toiletry kit, repair kit, etc), Map and book bag, 12x12 Paha Que screenroom/tent.

Richard, you did an amazing job, especially with all of our "help." Maybe next time those who bring for show-and-tell could do a 1-minute promo and then let people come look at what they want afterwards, to save time to talk food. :D

I may be mistaken cause Richard owns several canoes,
But
I think all that load of camping goodies is transported down river on one of the smaller solo canoes!!!!

Way to go Richard.....

Kim, Eric, Bob, Stan and you made the thing come together. Thank you and and the others for making it worthwhile.
Dave, As pictured above, it all fit in the 14.5 foot Wenonah Argosy. The October trip last year was the only time I took the Lafuma. I just wanted to show that it could be done but there are just as comfortable, more compact chairs. I am sold on the Paha Que screenroom. While it is bulky compared to other tents there is plenty of space for it, even in the Argosy. My order of priority in terms of comfort is (1) Cot, (2) self inflating 76x30x3" matress, (3) Table,(4) chair, (5) tent. To me that takes a second seat to no one. Keep in mind, if I was doing a lot of portaging or on longer trips, I would reshuffle some of my priorities.

Richard,

I have to agree with you on the Lafuma recliner for comfort.

I have one that is many years old and still going strong.

Last trip the lacing gave away and I replaced it with parachute cord. So it should go on for many more years.

Next Buffalo trip I will show you my custom sewn Lafuma bag, kind of big but it keeps the spray etc off the recliner.

And, dispite the transport problems, the Lafuma makes for great comfort, maybe even a extended nap or so. And, it is made out of steel not aluminium.

Dave, please do bring the lafuma bag. I didn't worry about mine getting wet but I guess that could be an issue because of it being made of steel. I try to put heavy things on the bottom but because of its size it had to ride on top. The Lafuma "locked" onto the front of my canoe(see pictures above) and I was surprised at how well it rode.

I didn't spend a whole lot of time in it because others were using it.
I have fallen asleep more than once in the Lafuma. But now that I take a cot with me, thats my choice for snoozing. I too have had issues with the chord breaking and like you, I have replaced it with parachute chord.

Thanks for the great presentation Richard (and others)! I agree with Kim about the impromtu "show and tells". I was hungry for more information gleaned from your trials and (possible) errors, Richard. Especially regarding food! Too bad you ran out of time. :( I guess I'll just have to tag along on one of your trips so I can watch and learn. *wink* I have a 10ft Loon rec yak, and can hold my own with the canoe crowd whereas the kayakers are way out of my league! Thanks again!
