Keep Arkansas Beautiful: Buffalo River Cleanup
The annual Keep Arkansas Beautiful Buffalo National River Cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, October 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cleanup volunteers will meet at the Buffalo Point middle pavilion at 9 a.m. The volunteers will be divided into two groups, with one group conducting river cleanup from North Maumee to the Highway 14 bridge, while the second group works from the Highway 14 bridge to Rush Landing. Volunteers who do not have a canoe will be provided one at no cost by local concessioners. Participants need to bring their own lunch and water. Shuttle service from the canoe take out points to the launch sites will be provided, so that participants can get back to their vehicles.
The purpose of this cleanup is for swimmers, whitewater paddlers, bass-anglers, nature enthusiasts, and concerned citizens to take part in keeping a designated Extraordinary Resource Water (ERW) in a clean condition for the designated uses currently listed for the river. Citizens of Northwest Arkansas, the Ozarks and tourists rely on Buffalo River for many recreational uses throughout the year. This is why so many people are going to be participating in the cleanup effort to take care of one of their favorite water resources.
The Keep Arkansas Beautiful: Buffalo River Cleanup is one of many kick-off events for the Great Arkansas Cleanup and will be a great activity for adults and children. Several youth clubs, civic organizations, private citizens and other individuals will take part in cleanup events across the state as part of the Great Arkansas Cleanup campaign between Sept.1 and Nov. 30.
Organizers for the October 4 event include Buffalo National River staff, the Ozark Society, Boy Scouts of America, and the Arkansas Canoe Club. Cleanup volunteers will be treated to many thanks, a free evening meal provided at the Buffalo Point middle pavilion at 6:00 p.m., cleanup awards and some fantastic door prizes.

There are two threads running about the cleanup. most of the discussion is on the Recreational thread.

Richard,
I am hoping to come to the clean up. If I am able to come, I will bring my girls. They have had a bad experience on the water... so I need to know... is the Buffalo very very calm water?
Calm water meaning no rapids.
Also, can you give me directions to where you are meeting?
Thanks!

Re: BUFFALO RIVER CLEANUP - OCT 4 - SATURDAY
Lobby Lady, I missed your post as I was already enroute. The Buffalo is easy class I. But as with anything else there is a certain amount of risk. The Buffalo is what is referred to as "Pool Drop" which means most of the time you are paddling flat water, then you go through a gentle drop to the next pool. The drop is anything from shallow riffles to relatively gentle rapids. The rapids and riffles are not a problem on the Buffalo. Strainers are the big danger and are avoidable by most anyone who can control the direction and movement of a canoe. We did have a strainer of consequence below South Maumee and above Spring Creek. Several canoes flipped and Painter Bob, realizing the problem tried to direct inexperienced paddlers away from it. He also was there helping them to recover from the spill.
Had you come, your girls would have had a great time.

My oldest
out on me. I am thinking of taking them on one of the floats this Fall maybe.
I want to join you guys on one of your camping trips in the next week or two. The short trip because I haven't camped on the river before...want to try it though.
Thanks Richard!
