Ooooooh, I wish I could say something. But I retired from this thread yesterday after I figured I had a much better chance of getting minor repairs to Debbie's boat completed than I did of convincing anyone of anything. It's going well, the end caps are back on, and the machine shop just cut the new seat bracket to adjust the seat per her preferences. Six 3/16" holes, 6 pop rivets, and I'll be done!

Nope. As Walter Brennan said, "No brag. Just fact". And that wasn't how I broke my arm twice, broke my leg or cut off a finger either. Growing up on a farm... Life is good. :D

Thanks for posting that link, Luke. I go to the Current/Jacks Fork area quite often. I really appreciate it. :D

Canoe_Codger's posts on jumping off farm barn roofs brought back memories.

I do not know why this activity has such appeal for young boys living on a farm.

But it sure does.

Me and my Bud next farm over, made a lot of jumps off their barn roof. Until he had a bad landing and I had to go get his Dad.

Punishment was swift and sure for him on the spot and me a short time later when he took me to my Mom and explained what happened. That was the end of our barn jumping.

The secret was to have a good excuse. Sky King was quite popular as were WWII movies and TV shows. Dad was a WWII veteran, and always wanted to learn to fly. So we blamed Sky King and John Wayne. Of course it had no effect on the switchings (leather western belt actually), but it gave us reason for quiet indignation that helped us endevour to persevere. Of course not everything we did was dangerous. Like catching water moccasins to sell to the guy from Memphis (fifty cents each!) or burning down the dog house (and outhouse). Like I said, many things sounded like a good idea at the time. How they turned out was a different matter. (cue theme from Green Acres).

Sig, My boy and I go to Steele Creek almost everyday in the summer and swim, saw grand total of ONE Ranger all summer long. They did have a volunteer who I saw a couple times. Place always had someone there, and at times was packed. Not one sign of vandalism, that's just silly.

I am reading that the White House is relenting and allowing States to fund operations and reopenings of National Parks. Is there any news of movement to do so with any of the BNR park?
Gov. Gary Herbert said he agreed to send the federal government $1.67 million to the cover the costs of keeping the parks open for the next 10 days after the Obama administration announced on Thursday that it would allow states to pay to reopen any of the country's 401 national parks.

"Pay ransom anyone?" Canoe Codger

So what do you think the Republicans have been doing with all their demands about defunding/delaying the law of the land?

Ransom? Hostage-taking?

Lots of folks getting hurt here and they are not all related to our national park system.

If a governor from Utah and get the raft launching site open for the Grand Canyon, you'd figure the Governor of AR could figure out a way to reopen the BNR.

Several states have already either paid or are considering paying the ran... er... the "fee" to reopen their National Parks under the terms the Department Of Interior specified, i.e. all or none for each park/monument, return of Federal Park employees, not State staffing, no transfer of ownership of Federal property. They have also backed off of most of their attempted closures of private property and State property.

Governor Jan Brewer -After a week of being persistent, I just negotiated the reopening of The Grand Canyon!

Note that the House, where all funding bills originate by law, passed the NPS funding on October 3rd.
Many Republicans have championed the parks funding bill, H.J. Res 70, after national monuments such as the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C., were closed down at midnight on Tuesday. According to The Hill, the bill was passed with a 252-173 vote, supported by 23 Democrats and opposed by one Republican.
It has sat in the Democrat majority senate ever since.

Show of force.

Doubt that Beebe would even consider opening back up BNR simply because he is a Democrat.
Jan Brewer of Arizona is a Republican. Both have their own reasons.

The longer we go with the government shutdown the longer people are realizing how unimportant it is. This is just like the sequester. Dire consequences were supposed to happen overnight. Cuts were made in a bloated Federal government and nobody even noticed once the media pundits quit saying the sky is gonna fall.

Truth be known the National Parks are one of the few things somebody can point to and see a real change to us subjects. I know the next post somebody will pull up a obscure government program about starving children or puppies. In reality daily life marches on for 99% of us. In reality the government really does have the flexibility to move money around if it wanted to.

The National Parks are under the Department of Interior and the director of the Department of Interior serves at the pleasure of the President. The National parks are a pawn. The Buffalo has no gate to go through, no ticket to sell, no registration and no life guard. It is just a open air area and runs on it's own. Now all of a sudden gates are put up and it is being patrolled like Fort Knox. It is a show of force. The Feds want everybody to know who is in charge . Just like how all of this got started in the first place. The Feds saying "you have to buy something".
Dr Ray Stantz: Personally, I liked the university. They gave us money and facilities, we didn't have to produce anything! You've never been out of college! You don't know what it's like out there! I've *worked* in the private sector. They expect *results*

The Mills have added a page to their BOC website identifying areas and attractions to visit, open trails and places to camp. It is worth a look-see.

Feed the elk! Oh wait... the elk are Arkansans under the governence of the AG&FC aren't they? Mike lists the Arkansas Game & Fish's Ponca Elk Education Center. And suggests elk watching from State Highway 43.

By the way, Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper is a Democrat and some parks there are opening. Rocky Mountain National Park will reopen temporarily Saturday. They are buying time in ten day parcels, same deal as above.

Canoe Codger, you don't know me very well, do you? I teach social studies in a public school. Civics 101 as you call it is something that I am more than familiar with since I usually teach it every year (like I have for the last 20 years) along with US and World history along with economics.

I have a really clear understanding about the three branches of government, separation of powers, etc. I even understand how the House of Representatives are apportioned by population and the term gerrymandering.

Got a pretty good grasp of things or at least I like to think so. But feel free to enlighten me.

But I also can see through bulls**t. You did hear or read of the representative who made this comment, didn't you?

“We’re not going to be disrespected,” Stutzman said. “We have to get something out of this. And I don’t know what that even is.”

Like I said, I know the difference between negotiating, compromising, and hostage-taking. Besides the ACA was modeled on Romney's plan for Massachusetts when he was governor. What's changed? I got my ideas but I'll keep them to myself.

National parks or Headstart? Or NIH? or OSHA? Just pass a clean CR. For the Republican Party (or what is left of it), it's that simple.
